Lo, sorrow at dawn, O visitor who
Oh! Sadness in the morning, O visitor who
came to us and greeted us from the nearest Presence.
Came to us, so he revived us from the dear, prized presence
فقلتso I said لهto him أهلاًwelcome وسهلاand be at ease ومرحباand welcome
بواردِto a bearer of بشرىglad tidings جاءcame منfrom موردٍa spring أصفىpurer
So I said to him, 'Welcome, and be at ease, and welcome,
So I said to him welcome, greetings, and hello
to a bearer of glad tidings who came from a purer spring.'
To the bearer of good tidings who came from a purer source
فقالthen he said سلامٌpeace عندناwith us وتحيةand a greeting
عليكمupon you وتسليمand a salutation منfrom الغادةthe maiden الهيفاthe slender one
Then he said, 'With us are peace and a greeting
So he said, “Peace be upon you,
upon you, and a salutation from the slender maiden,
And greetings upon you, and regards from the gentle, kindly one
منfrom among اللاءthose women who لمdid not يحجبنveil إلاexcept بقيتهhis remnant
فقلتso I said لهto him القنوىthe aquiline-nosed one فقالthen he said هيshe is الذلفاthe snub-nosed one
from among those women who veiled only his remnant.'
Of the banners, nothing concealed me except its remains
So I asked him, 'The aquiline-nosed one?' He said, 'She is the snub-nosed one.'
So I said to him, “the banners,” and he said, “It is the banners.”
لقدindeed طلعتshe rose فيin العينthe eye بدراًas a full moon مُكملاperfect

Indeed, she rose in the eye as a perfect full moon,
The full moon rose in my eye,
and as a necklace on our neck, and a bracelet on my forearm.
And on my cheek a necklace, and on my wrist a bracelet
فقلتso I said لهاto her منwho أنتare you قالتshe said جهلتنيyou did not recognize me
أناI am نفسكyour self الغرّاthe radiant تجلَّتْmanifested itself لكمto you لُطفاgently
So I said to her, 'Who are you?' She said, 'You did not recognize me.
So I said to it, “Who are you?” It said, “You did not recognize me
I am your radiant self, gently manifested to you.'
I am your soul that appeared to you in kindness.”
فاعرضتُso I turned away عنهاfrom her كيso that أفوزI might attain بقربهاnearness to her
وطأطأتُand I lowered رأسيmy head ماnot رفعتُI raised لهاtoward her طرفاa glance
So I turned away from her, that I might attain nearness to her,
So I turned away from it so I could attain being near it
and lowered my head, never raising a glance toward her.
And I lowered my head, I did not raise to it a glance.
وقدand indeed شغفتُI was consumed حباًwith love بذاتيfor my essence وماand not درتshe knew
وقدand indeed ملئتُI was filled تيهاًwith pride وقدand indeed حُشيَتْshe was filled ظرفاwith charm
And I was consumed with love for my essence, while she did not know;
And I was impassioned with love for my own self but did not realize
and I was filled with pride, and she was filled with charm.
And I was filled with confusion and my container was stuffed.
وثارتْand rose جيادُthe steeds of الريحthe wind جوداًin generosity وهمةand aspiration
وماand not سبقتthey outstripped ريحاًa wind تهبُّblowing ولاnor طرفاa noble steed
And the steeds of the wind rose in generosity and aspiration,
And the steeds of the wind galloped with generosity and zeal
yet they outstripped neither a blowing wind nor a noble steed.
And no wind blew or glanced that outran it.
وجاءand came الإلهGod الحقُّthe Real للفصلfor judgment والقضاand decree
علىthrough الكشفِunveiling والأملاكُand the angels صفاًin a rank لهfor him صفاin a rank
And God, the Real, came for judgment and decree,
And the True God came for judgment and decree
through unveiling, with the angels arrayed for him, rank upon rank.
About unveiling, and the angels in rows for Him, row by row
عنarose الحكمthe judgment عنfrom أعيانناour essences وهوand it is علمهhis knowledge
وماand not غادرواthey omitted مماof what علمتُI knew بهabout it حرفاa letter
The judgment arose from our essences, and it is his knowledge,
About the ruling, about our beings, and His knowledge is of it
and they omitted not a letter of what I knew about it.
And they did not leave out anything I knew a letter of.

علىover الخصمthe adversary شرعاًby sacred law أوor مشاهدةby witnessing كشفاthrough unveiling
For this reason, God's proof prevailed
For that reason, God’s authority was supreme
over the adversary, by sacred law or by witnessed unveiling.
Over the adversary, by sacred law or unveiling witnessing.
وهبَّand blew نسيمُthe breeze of القربِnearness منfrom جانبthe side of الحمىthe sanctuary

And the breeze of nearness blew from the side of the sanctuary,
And the breeze of nearness blew from the side of ardor
and gave us fragrance from the wafting scent of its ambergris.
So it gifted us the scent of its ambergris fragrance.

I consecrated to one who was of me, as though he were
I was detained by the one who was to me as though he were
my heart and limbs, an endowment because of my absorption in him.
My heart and my limbs, by my preoccupation with him and pause.

And he whose dispatches moved through our being,
And when I stopped sending him signals in our existence,
to my presence, one after another, with what was sent in succession,
His presence sent to me in response the signals I had sent.

and his spirits drive the clouds of his knowledge
And his spirits stir clouds of his knowledge
toward my beloved with intent, and he buffets them fiercely.
To my empty interior, aiming there, gusting them as a gust,

Lightning glimmers for her in the pupil of my eye;
Lightning from it flashes for the beholding eye of my humanity,
the flash of its radiance almost snatches it away.
And the brilliance of his lightning nearly snatched it away in a snatch.

And the sound of thunder follows it, singing praise,
And thunder succeeds it, glorifying
so that my compassion may drive them on and shatter them with a crash.
To restrain it, so my mercy shreds it to pieces.

The drops of rain emerge from openings within them,
The patter of the rain comes through breaches in them,
and God's earth becomes like an untouched meadow.
So God’s earth becomes like a well-watered meadow.

I caught her scent by the emblems of a banner,
I smelled in it a scent with the flags of a banner,
like the aroma of her strong wine when drunk unmixed.
As though its protectiveness drank fresh pure water.

And when her branches drew near for plucking,
And when its branches drew near to be picked,
I took a cluster from them, as the Prophet did for them.
I plucked from it as the Prophet plucked for them a pick.

And when I remembered the Messenger and his deed
in such a case, I never ceased to seek alliance,
Upon the like of this, I did not stop seeking the sworn pact,

The inheritance from the one by whom God revived his heart,
And had I been, I would have been the heir, the successor, the successor.
Even if I were the inheriting successor, the last successor.

Oh! I hope my confusion will disappear,
and I hope for guidance and compassion from God.
And I hope for guidance and kindness from God,

If the face appears to me in the eye of my bewilderment,
my eye finds solace in it, and I am most solicitous toward it.
I will be steadfast with it, and by it I will be most diligent.

Signs of it become clear to me, one possessed of understanding,
Signs for it are clear to me, of sound proof,
and its landmarks among the stations are not hidden.
And its flags between spiritual stations are not hidden.
