Where are you, where are you, O men?

Drink it as milk from our udder,

As a thirsty man drinks upon finding clear, sweet water.

It resembles the miraculous in its source.

O, for vengeance for a matter that cannot be attained

By acquisition—it is from the words of one

Who spoke of establishing stillness in the very essence of impossibility.

It is a shadow of the one you know,

And for this reason, its status is that of shadows.

A person's perfection is nothing but his shadow,

If, through the shadow, perfection itself is his.

And for this reason God extended it for us,

So we see it before us as an example.

God is exalted beyond our comprehension.

And likewise, we are majesty within beauty.

Knowledge of Him is only knowledge of ourselves,

And therefore we are ignorant of Him in every state.

    حكمة الظلِّ ترى عند الزوال

    In the shadow's return lies clear knowledge;

The shadow's wisdom is seen at its vanishing.
