إنَّ الذي بوجودي اليومَ أعرفه

هو الذي في غد بذاك أنكره

Indeed, the one I recognize today through my existence

The one whose existence today I know

is the one I fail to recognize tomorrow through that same existence.

Is he whom tomorrow in that I will deny

إن كان أخفاه في عيني تقلبه

إن كان أخفاه في عيني تقلبه

فإنَّ فلبي في التقليب يبصره

فإنَّ فلبي في التقليب يبصره

If his changing has hidden him from my sight,

If he has hidden in my eyes his change

then my heart sees him in the turning.

Then my heart in change sees him

من أعجب الأمر أني حين أذكره

من أعجب الأمر أني حين أذكره

أغيبُ عنه ويدنيني تذكره

أغيبُ عنه ويدنيني تذكره

Among the strangest things is that, when I remember him,

Of the strangest thing is that when I remember him

I am absent from him, and remembering him draws me near.

I become absent from him and remembering him brings me near

رأيته ذاكرا لي حين أذكره

رأيته ذاكرا لي حين أذكره

في كلِّ حالٍ وتخفيني فأظهره

في كلِّ حالٍ وتخفيني فأظهره

I saw him remembering me when I remember him,

I saw him remembering me when I remember him

in every state; you conceal me, so I reveal him.

In every state and he hides me so I manifest him

إيّاه أسأل عنه حين يسألني

إيّاه أسأل عنه حين يسألني

عني وينسى إذا أنسى فأذكره

عني وينسى إذا أنسى فأذكره

I ask him about himself when he asks me

It is he whom I ask about when he asks me

about me; and he forgets when I forget, so I remember him.

لو أنه في وجودي حين يشهدني

لو أنه في وجودي حين يشهدني

ما كنتُ اشهده ما كنت أبصره

ما كنتُ اشهده ما كنت أبصره

Were he in my existence when he beholds me,

If he in my existence when he sees me

I would not behold him; I would not see him.
