إنَّindeed المهيمنthe Guardian وصّىenjoined الجارthe neighbor بالجارِconcerning the neighbor
إنَّ المهيمن وصّى الجار بالجارِ
والكلُّand everyone جارٌa neighbor لربِّto the Lord of الناسِhumankind والدارِand the abode
والكلُّ جارٌ لربِّ الناسِ والدارِ
Indeed, the Guardian has enjoined each neighbor to care for his neighbor.
The Almighty commanded the neighbor to care for his neighbor
And all are neighbors of the Lord of humankind and the abode.
And all are neighbors of the Lord of mankind and abode
فإنso if تعدَّىtransgresses عليهagainst him جارُهhis neighbor فلهthen he has the right to
فإن تعدَّى عليه جارُه فله
العفوُpardon والأخذُand requital آثاراًmarks بآثارِfor marks
العفوُ والأخذُ آثاراً بآثارِ
If his neighbor wrongs him, he may
So if his neighbor transgresses against him, he has
Pardon or exact requital, mark for mark.
The choice of forgiveness or retribution in kind
إنif شاءَhe wishes عاقبهhe punishes him أوor يعفhe pardons عنout of كرمٍgenerosity
إن شاءَ عاقبه أو يعف عن كرمٍ
والعفوand pardon شيمةُthe trait of منone who يصغيlistens attentively إلىto القاريthe reciter
والعفو شيمةُ من يصغي إلى القاري
If he wishes, he punishes him, or pardons out of generosity.
If he wills, he may punish him, or forgive with kindness
And pardon is the trait of one who listens attentively to the reciter.
And forgiveness is the mark of one who heeds the Reciter
