    Indeed, religious obligations run their course to a term,

    but knowledge of God runs to no end.

    At every moment a person grows in knowledge

    of his Lord and of states, forever.

    So no breath passes him today

    without bringing knowledge that never ceases to arrive.

    So, since knowledge is unavoidable, the best of it

    is knowledge of God, not of the cosmos; seek more.

    As the Guardian's command came to you in

    Ta-Ha and in a tradition: act upon it, and you will gain more.

    Knowledge of God, as I understand it, lies in knowing ourselves.

    To this the Chosen One referred; and indeed—

    God is not known, so we have no

    knowledge of ourselves; consider what I have said, and you will find

    that incapacity is our utmost reach concerning Him; its outcome is:

    'No knowledge of myself or Him' revolves in my mind.

    والعلمُ بالله عينُ العلمِ بالرصَد

    So be mindful of God, you there, with caution;

    and knowledge of God is the very knowledge of watchfulness.

    In the surah of Dawn, God said, teaching us,

    'Your Lord lies in wait'; so rely

    on Him: He has knowledge that He renews,

    for He abounds in goodness and bounty.

    He gives gifts, yet does not give them out of generosity,

    for He is the known generosity itself; so scrutinize.

    If He possessed generosity, it would be His cause,

    yet He possesses no cause that guides to right understanding.

    When I was alone with the known in my mind,

    I asked, 'Who is this?' They said, 'The egg of the land.'

    Then I said, when I saw the matter in myself as

    I have described, judging what is nearest and what is remote,

    الكلُّ مثلك فاسمع هدى منتقد

    and my inner thought said to me, 'You are not alone in it;

    all are like you; so hear a discerning critic's guidance':

    Indeed, I judged concerning Him through what I uttered

    of insights into Him, with a diligent inquirer's judgment.

    أو لم أصب فهو مني لا من الأحد

    If I am right, that is what I expect of myself and Him;

    or, if I miss the mark, it is from me, not from the One.

    I did not say that from any ill thought stirring within me,

    but said it out of courtesy toward a self-sufficient Master.

    من ظنَّ بالله سوءاً كان في حيد

    I thought well of God whenever I made that judgment;

    whoever thinks ill of God is in deviation

    from the right understanding continually sought

    from me; if it were absent, I would become a man of folly.

    I received from One whose favors are great

    these insights; I did not receive them from the many.

    From Him, in direct witnessing, I obtained forms of knowledge

    that speculative thinkers cannot attain over spans of time.

    Indeed, speculative thinkers cannot attain it through spans of time

    extending to the last of nights, nor can one who speaks by a chain of transmission.

    فاعمل عليه فما في الربع من أحدِ

    Knowledge is a tasting, immediately certain to its taster;

    so act upon it: there is no one in the encampment.
