Indeed, existence is the Real's existence; we have no

scope in it, if that is what I mean.

I do indeed witness him, and the Real witnesses me.

I behold him through the state I am in.

Creation, then, has nothing but what it beholds.

And as for my having been described by one of his meanings,

thus, through him, I am a sign in my outward form,

while my inward self is pain from what I endure.

Between me and you is a covenant from you, established

by a sacred law that came to us; we fulfill it, and I fulfill it.

The eye sees nothing in which it delights,

but he immediately conceals and protects it.

Thus I do not grasp the reality of anything.

And how could I grasp it, when you are within it?

Rather, you are its very essence; hence the proof stands for you

against me, conclusively; so you reveal it and conceal it.

I did not learn of this matter from myself,

but through the speech I heard from his mouth.

For he is my very utterance when I speak to you,

together with the tongue; this much suffices him.

I do indeed conceal matters drawn from his realities,

elucidating a matter that pleased him—

From whom? There is only one there; therefore

I suffer from him what he suffers from me.

My longing is intense, and the Real's longing is greater than

mine; thus it was stated in what he revealed.

Indeed, I am his two deputies [unclear wording]—David and the most radiant one who

was in the All-Merciful's grasp as he brought him forth.

The winds of bounty blew upon us out of generosity.

His messengers brought it at his self-disclosure.

Thus the consummate knower attained it from books,

in keeping with his state of self-adornment.

If he is in an assembly, the state embarrasses him.

Thus he is seen inclined toward divesting himself.

Indeed, the ignorant one who affirms them in others,

while openly denying them in me, rivals him.

And if he knew that I possess them by inheritance,

he would rise in fury [uncertain wording] to extinguish the light.

So we have no means by which we may hope for deliverance,

except to ask the one who made him transgress to guide him.
