إنif صادفencounters الإنسانthe human being علماًknowledge منfrom الحقthe Real
إن صادف الإنسان علماً من الحق
فليسthen it is not بعلمknowledge عندهin his view وهوyet it is فيin الذوقspiritual tasting
فليس بعلم عنده وهو في الذوق
If a human being encounters knowledge from the Real,
If a man comes upon a truth of knowledge,
it is not knowledge in his eyes; yet in spiritual tasting it is
It is not knowledge to him, and he is in mere taste,
لمنfor whoever قالهspeaks it بالكشفthrough unveiling علمknowledge محققverified
لمن قاله بالكشف علم محقق
بهthrough it يقعدsits الإنسانthe human being فيin مقعدthe seat of الصدقtruth
به يقعد الإنسان في مقعد الصدق
verified knowledge for whoever speaks it through unveiling.
For the one who said it by unveiling, it is verified knowledge,
Through it, the human being sits in the seat of truth.
By which man sits in the seat of truth.
وماand not حازهattained it إلاexcept إمامٌan imam مجرَّدٌdivested
وما حازه إلا إمامٌ مجرَّدٌ
نزيهuntainted عنby الثوبِthe garment المحيّرbewildering والريقand saliva
نزيه عن الثوبِ المحيّر والريق
And none has attained it but a divested imam,
And none has attained it except an abstracted imam,
untainted by the bewildering garment and saliva.
Pure from misleading garb and vanity.
بهthrough it يشربُdrinks الإنسانthe human being ماءthe water of حياتهhis life
به يشربُ الإنسان ماء حياته
بهthrough it تفتقare opened الأسماعthe ears إنْif كُنَّthey were فيin رَتقِclosure
به تفتق الأسماع إنْ كُنَّ في رَتقِ
Through it, the human being drinks the water of his life.
By it man drinks the water of his life,
Through it, the ears are opened if they were sealed shut.
By it ears split open, if they are bound.
إذاwhen طلعتrises شمسٌa sun منfrom الربthe Lord صيّرتit turns
إذا طلعت شمسٌ من الرب صيّرت
بمطلعهاthrough its rising الغربthe west المحققactual فيinto شرقan east
بمطلعها الغرب المحقق في شرق
When a sun rises from the Lord, it turns
When a sun rises from the Lord, it makes
through its rising, the actual west into an east.
Its rising turn the realized west into east.
كفارdisbelievers وقناand protect us (reading uncertain) والمنتقىand the chosen one وخليفتهand his successor
كفار وقنا والمنتقى وخليفته
وقدand indeed عادhas returned حكمthe judgment of اللهGod فيهconcerning him لذيto the possessor of السَّبقprecedence
وقد عاد حكم الله فيه لذي السَّبق
Disbelievers—and protect us—and the chosen one and his successor.
The unbelievers of Cana and the elect, and his caliph,
And God's judgment concerning him has returned to the one with precedence.
And the judgment of God in him returns to the first.
فلوso if كانit were عنfrom كشفunveiling لماwould not كانhe was باكياًweeping
فلو كان عن كشف لما كان باكياً
ولوand if كانit were عنfrom ظنٍّconjecture لماwould not قالhe declared بالعتقfor emancipation
ولو كان عن ظنٍّ لما قال بالعتق
So had it come from unveiling, he would not have been weeping;
So if it were from unveiling he would not be weeping,
and had it come from conjecture, he would not have declared emancipation.
And if it were from assumption he would not speak of manumission.
