أقولI say وقدand already بانتhave appeared شواهدsigns علتيmy affliction
بأنيthat I محبوبٌbeloved لموجدof the originator of علتيmy affliction
I say, now that the signs of my affliction have appeared,
I say, as the proofs of my plight have become clear,
that I am beloved of the one who brought my affliction into being.
That I am beloved to the Maker of my plight.
فمنso who هوhe نفسيmy self أوor مغايرdistinct from عينهاits very essence
ومنand who هوhe اجزائيmy parts ومنand who هوhe جملتيmy whole
So who is my self, or distinct from its essence?
So who is myself or who is identical to it?
And who is my parts, and who is my whole?
And who are my parts and who is my whole?
إذاwhen عاينتْbeheld عينيmy eye سبيلَthe path of وجودهاits existence
بفكريthrough my thought وذاتاand an essence لمnot تكنwas غيرother than نشأتيmy coming into being
When my eye beholds the path of its existence
When my eyes perceived the way of their existence
through my thought, and an essence that was none other than my own coming into being,
Through my intellect and selfhood, they were none other than my origination.
أقولI say لهاto her منwho أنتyou قالتshe said مكلميthe one speaking to me
فقلتso I said أرىI see ثنتينtwo منfrom خلفbehind كلتيmy veil
I say to her, 'Who are you?' She replies, 'The one speaking to me.'
I say to it, "Who are you?" It said, "My speaker."
So I said, 'I see two from behind my veil.'
So I said, "I see two from behind both my shoulders."
فقالتso she said وكثرand multiply مماof whatever تشاءyou wish فإننيfor indeed I
وإنand though كنتI am فرداًone أنتمُyou (plural) أصلthe source of كثرتيmy multiplicity
So she said, 'And multiply them as you wish, for I—
It said, "And increase from what you wish, for I
though I am one, you all are the source of my multiplicity.'
Even if I'm an individual, you are the origin of my multiplicity."
فياso O منwho هوhe المقصودthe one sought فيin كلِّevery وجهةdirection
بوجهيwith my face إذاwhen ماever (emphasis) كنتyou are ليfor me عينthe very essence of قبلتيmy direction of prayer
So O you who are sought in every direction
So O He who is meant in every orientation
with my face, whenever you are my very direction of prayer:
With my face when I was an eye of my aspiration for You.
فماso not عاينتbeheld عينايmy two eyes فرداًa single one مقسماdivided
إلىinto عددa plurality إلاexcept الذيthe one who هوhe علتيmy cause
my eyes have beheld no single one divided
My eyes perceived no individual divided
into a plurality except the one who is my cause.
Into numbers except the One who is my plight.
هوhe الكلthe whole والأجزاءand the parts عينُthe very essence of وجودِهhis existence
فياso O مثبتيyou who establish me بيthrough me لستyou are not غيرother than مثبتيwhat I establish
He is the whole, and the parts are his existence itself.
He is the All and the parts, the eye of His existence.
So O you who establish me through me, you are none other than what I establish.
So O You who affirm me, I am none other than You who affirm me.
لقدindeed حرتُI was bewildered فيabout أمرa matter تقسمbecame divided واحداًwhile one
فأينso where وجوديmy existence قلtell ليme أمor أينَwhere وحدتيmy oneness
I have indeed been bewildered by a matter divided, yet one.
I became confused about a matter of dividing the One.
Then where is my existence? Tell me—or where is my oneness?
So where is my existence? Tell me, or where is my oneness?
فياso O منwho يرىsees عقديmy knots وحيرةand the bewilderment of خاطريmy mind
ويسرعand hastens بالتقريبby bringing near فيin حَلِّuntying عقدتيmy knot
So O you who see my knots and my mind's bewilderment,
O You who sees my knot and the confusion of my mind
and hasten, by drawing me near, to untie my knot:
And hastens to unravel the knotting of my plight!
علمتُI learned بأنيthat I عبدهhis servant وهوand he سيديmy master
وسلمand remained sound ليfor me علميmy knowledge وأنشأand engendered حيرتيmy bewilderment
I have learned that I am his servant, and he is my master.
I learned that I am His servant and He is my Master.
And my knowledge remained sound for me and gave rise to my bewilderment.
And He gave me my knowledge and originated my confusion.
وأعلمand I know أنيthat I حائرbewildered وهوand he فارغunoccupied
كماjust as هوhe فيin شغلoccupation فياso O حسرتيmy anguish التيwhich

And I know that I am bewildered, while he is unoccupied,
And I know that I am confused and He is free,
even as he is occupied. O my anguish, whose

فماso what حسنgoodness أفعاليmy actions وماand what سوءevil فعلتيmy deed
sight drives me far away in the very midst of my nearness!
Distance from Him in the eye of witnessing His nearness!
So what is the goodness of my actions, and what is the evil of my deed?
So how good are my deeds and how evil is my doing!
لقدindeed علمتْknew نفسيmy soul وجوداًan existence محققاًfully realized
وغابتْand became absent بهthrough it عنيfrom me فلمso did not تدرknow حكمتيmy wisdom
My soul has indeed known a fully realized existence,
Indeed my soul learned of an established existence,
and through it was lost to me, so it did not know my wisdom.
And through it was veiled from me, so it did not know my wisdom.
