I saw an unadorned maiden in a dream,

Beautiful, with no sister among humankind.

She gazes at me with an eye all dark-and-white loveliness,

So I died of passion for her, from that dark-and-white loveliness.

When I looked at her while she looked at me,

Her bonds dissolved from the pleasure of gazing.

And I said to the soul: O soul, behold a wonder!

This is imagination—what, then, of sense-perception, O my sight?

Look at its subtlety and the beauty of its form,

With the letter fāʾ, “that I may care,” from the realm of thought [wording unclear].

And regard it as an existence: no nonbeing has arisen

In it, nor any regret, from the form of humankind.

For it is the Garden of Refuge for its inhabitant,

And the Garden of Eternity, not from the garden of gazing.

And that is the Garden of Eden; the dune is within it,

Together with the forms it contains.

These are the heights that her thoughts seek,

And these are what the people of unveiling attained through gazing.

Where, then, is their ultimate reach in what I have described to you?

These scents are from musk fragrant to them.
