I saw a sky shine on a clear horizon,

    from the peerless landmark.

    And when it cloaked itself

    in the finest mantle,

    a crescent appeared

    on the highest horizon.

    I tasted guidance

    at the sweetest watering place.

Nor am I suspect concerning what I tasted,

    for I know the intent.

    I heard the echo

    from Mount Sinai,

and with me was an echo

of the water—[the final word is unclear].

    Then the echo spoke,

    informing sons,

so he might know what I brought after a while,

    of faithfulness to the promise.

    I wished to

    behold through God,

    and I did not know

that through Him came my standing.

So I said to the one

who singled me out by awakening me:

The discerning, trustworthy Spirit surely knew

    what I hold for you.

    I kept faith with you

    in the covenant for ages.

    And through you came

    that which came to be.

And what I said to you [wording unclear]

    was truth and faith.

If one like me is faithless in love for you,

who then will keep the covenant?

    I hoped for union,

    while separation brings ruin.

    قال يا بعدي

    I sought communion;

    he said, 'Ah, my remoteness!'

    So I recited at once

    to the one beside me:

Just when I hoped for union with you, must I perish,

    tormented by rejection?
