I looked at the very essence of existence, but did not see

anything eternal; instead, I saw something newly arisen.

I think that what had been between me and him

was an elucidation called, for the veil, “kalūthā” (unclear).

So, in seeking my true nature, I likened myself

to a night that came seeking the day in haste,

to take from it for a time, then return it

to the unseen, so that it is not seen spread abroad.

And can any but their eternal one annihilate the causes?

Yet, in direct vision, we see him as coming into being.

So he stretched through us a cord descending from on high,

and, among cords, it was not to be called threadbare.

    لها ألسنٌ فينا وكم وكميثا

    His is a power that envelops our eyes in drowsiness;

it has tongues within us—and how many!—and “kamīthā” (unclear).

And he is given a little of my existence, because I

am little, yet he gives us existence in abundance.

On the day of joy, I laugh with noble women,

and on the grim day, I welcome lions.

We heard pleasant talk in al-Rusafa,

and to one who wrongs me, if he heard it, it would be foul.
