I imagined the one I love outside my form.

So I measured his nearness by the fathom and the handspan.

He revives my heart through union and meeting,

And kills me through his rejection and abandonment.

He bares an upright bough and a sand dune,

And smiles to reveal pearls, and unveils a full moon.

And makes a pure river flow for us from the udder,

And of purer honey, of water, and of wine.

    خلقتُ بها النشأتين بلا أمر

    He sustains my being with it, for I am made of four;

I was fashioned through them in both creations, without a command,

With the command to bring into being in every state.

And I do not know its meaning, nor know that I do not know.

I came to him by an easy path,

Made smooth, but on a rough-riding mount,

With strings plucked by the hands of budding-breasted maidens,

Who lean toward us out of love, not drunkenness.

Then, when we reflected, we found our being

Through his most beautiful names; so I rose and ran with them

To the world of beings, telling them of those names,

As the All-Merciful has declared in the clear text of the Reminder.
