وماand what لاis not فماso ... not قلناwe spoke وماnor أدراكinformed you السمعُhearing
I have known all that exists in the unseen,
I learned of all things hidden and unseen
And what is not; so we have not spoken, nor has hearing informed you.
Of all we never said and you never heard
علىdespite أننيthat I ماnot كنتُI was إلاexcept موحِّداًan affirmer of oneness
بتوحيدِwith an affirmation of oneness فرقseparation ماnot يخالطهmingles with it جمعُunion
Although I was nothing but an affirmer of oneness,
Yet I profess nothing but pure monotheism
With an affirmation of oneness in separation, unmixed with union.
A creed permitting no trace of pluralism

وهلand can ...?
In apprehension, the Real transcends every created thing.
Truth transcends perceiving each event
And can what nature has bound grasp transcendence?
Can the unbound be grasped by finite reason?
علاهrose above it بهاthrough it عقلاًin intellect وليسand not بذاتهin his essence
وليسand there is not لمخلوقٍfor any creature علىfor حملهbearing him وسعcapacity
He rose above it thereby in intellect, not in his essence,
By it minds are raised, but not His essence
And no creature has the capacity to bear him.
No creature bears the weight of His burden
عبيدa humble servant وفيand in التحقيقrealization ربٌa lord كصورةٍlike an image
وليسand there is no لهfor him ضرٌّharm وليسand there is no لهfor him نفعbenefit
A humble servant, yet in realization a lord, like an image,
Bondsmen we are, essentially the Lord
And his is neither harm nor benefit.
To Him no harm or benefit accrues

تعالىhe is exalted فلاso no فطرfissure لديهwith him ولاand no صَدْعrift
Great over whom, or majestic for whose sake?
Exalted over those to whom or those by whom
He is exalted: with him there is neither fissure nor rift.
Above rending, seamless Purity
ولكنbut عمنfrom whom? إذsince هوhe السيبُbounty والمنعand withholding
Mighty, lowly, destitute, possessed of wealth—
Mighty, abased, wretched, rich
But independent of whom, since he is bounty and withholding?
But from whom, if not the Giver and Withholder?
عبدناهwe worshipped him بالفقرِthrough poverty الذيwhich قامsubsisted عندناwithin us
ولوand if قامarose ضدَّthe opposite of الفقرِpoverty لمnot ندرِwe knew ماwhat الصنعthe action
We worshipped him through the poverty that dwelt within us;
We worshipped Him in the poverty we saw
And had poverty’s opposite arisen, we would not have known what to do.
Had we seen otherwise, what would we have done?

نقيٌpure وقيّcautious فهوso he ليfor me الوترthe odd والشفعand the even
Over us is a watcher of piety, vested with authority,
Over us a Guardian, appointed, pure
Pure and cautious: for me he is the odd and the even.
He is my final thread and paired return

I rose above transcendence in meaning, yet he did not rise
I transcend attributing meaning or modality
Above judgment and likeness; so let whoever invokes invoke.
Beyond similitude and governance let him despair who despairs
