I beheld the one you call the Succor, and the one

To whom dominion belongs after the Succor; yet the Succor does not know

What makes him the Succor; then, if he is aware

Of it, then it is a special favor that came, traveling through his night.

Blessed is the King of dominion; exalted is His majesty.

And mighty is He, so neither thought nor remembrance can grasp Him.

He is exalted above all likenesses, lofty in station.

Blessed is He, until the heart embraced Him within my breast.

And I did not know what this was, nor is it clear to us—

His saying about it: 'By the even and the odd.'

We knew Him when we recited His Book.

Thus that odd is for open utterance, and the even for the secret.

And my wonder is not at water from rain clouds; rather,

I marveled at water that flowed from dry rock,

As when Moses struck with the staff the stone that

Gushed forth water among people, for whom it flows.

And each group knows its own share of water,

Distinguishing it by taste, even if it is in the river.
