Honoring your Lord lies in honoring what He has ordained.

So proclaim openly, for the fortunate among the people is whoever proclaims.

But at the command of the one whose law has come to you,

striving on foot; so thank him when he strove.

So be with God in the ordering of His wisdom.

Indeed, whoever is with my Lord is not 'together'.

Understand my words, for understanding has made you happy.

Do not stray from it; knowledge has indeed brought things together.

It is the proof of Him; do not leave it neglected.

For ruin lies in abandoning what the All-Merciful has ordained.

Knowledge has two halves: one half is not reached

by thought; therefore thought's judgment has been barred.

And half of it is reached by sound thought,

and its rank is not like that of what was heard.

All of it is true; I have not done it justice, and there is no

refutation of that; whoever knows it has brought both together.

It possesses perfection; so no person can rival it—

God's handiwork; so God's baring of teeth worked through me [wording unclear].

By God, if my soul knew through whom it knew,

creation's existence would be too narrow for it, however vast it grew.

The heart knows my Lord through its turning,

like His affairs, whether it goes forth or returns.

And the soul is ignorant of Him because of its desire,

and its eye has not wept at separation from the Real.

When He held aloof from him, he spent the night seeking Him.

And had He drawn near to him, he would not have returned to Him.

And a well-known proverb has circulated; its wording is:

The thing dearest to a person is what is withheld.
