Whoever desired me and I desired

I have never ceased lamenting him to goodness,

I continued to treat with kindness

حتى بدا للذوق ما قد بدا

منه إلى قلبي فألغيه

منه إلى قلبي فألغيه

Until what had already appeared became manifest to taste,

Until it became clear to my taste what had become

From him to my heart; so I set it aside,

Clear of him to my heart, so I rejected him

خوفاً على قلبي أن الردى

خوفاً على قلبي أن الردى

يلحقه إذ كان يطغيه

يلحقه إذ كان يطغيه

Fearing for my heart lest death

Out of fear for my heart that ruin

Overtake it, since he was driving it to excess.

Would befall it, since he had come to dominate it
