سبحانglory be to منthe One لاnot أرىI see سواهother than Him
فيin كلِّevery شيءthing تراهsees it عينيmy eye
Glory be to Him, besides whom I see none,
Glorious is He whom I see naught but Him
in everything my eye beholds.
In everything my eyes can see
وذاكand that فرقٌa distinction يراهperceives it عقليmy intellect
ماwhat بينbetween معبودهits object of worship وبينيand between me
And that is a distinction my intellect perceives
And that is the difference my mind perceives
between its object of worship and me.
Between the One I worship and me
فكلماso whenever قلتI said أنتyou ربيmy Lord
لبستُI donned بالسلبِthrough negation ثوبَa robe صوفيa Sufi's
So whenever I said, 'You are my Lord,'
Whenever I say You are my Lord
I donned, through negation, a Sufi's robe.
I don the cloak of a Sufi in humbleness
تنزيههdeclaring Him transcendent جدُّهHis majesty تعالىis exalted
تشبيهُهlikening Him كونهHis being بكونيthrough my being
Declaring Him transcendent: exalted is His majesty;
His transcendence is His utmost exaltation
likening Him: His being through my being.
His immanence is His being as me
طلبتُI sought بالشرعِthrough the sacred law منهfrom Him عوناًhelp
ياO مدعيclaimant لاnot يكونis عونيmy help
Through the sacred law, I sought help from Him.
I sought help from Him through the Sharia
O claimant, my help is not given
O claimant, there can be no help for me
إلاexcept لعبدٍfor a servant لهhe has مجالٌscope
ولاand no مجالٌscope إلاexcept لأينيfor my 'where'
except to a servant who has scope;
Except for a servant who has been given access
and there is no scope except for my 'where.'
And no access except for where I can be
وفيand in استوائيmy settling العقولُminds تاهتwent astray
إذsince حالstood in the way ماwhat بينهاbetween them وبينيand between me
And in my settling, minds went astray,
In my moderation, minds lost their way
since what lay between them and me stood in the way.
When what lies between them and me held sway
قدindeed جاءناcame to us الحقُّthe Real فيin التلقيreceiving
بكلِّwith every هينٍeasy thing وكلِّand every لينِgentle thing
The Real has indeed come to us in the act of receiving,
The truth has come to us in reception
with all that is easy and all that is gentle.
In every ease and softness, I say
ياO مرسلاًmessenger إننيindeed I سميعٌa listener
إنif قمتyou undertake ليfor me فيهconcerning Him باثنتينwith two things
O messenger, I am indeed listening,
O Messenger, I am indeed hearing
if you establish two things for me concerning Him:
If you stand by me with two attestations
ذاتٌan essence تعالتْis exalted لهاit has صفاتٌattributes
منof كلِّevery حسنٍbeauty وكلِّand every زينِadornment
an exalted essence that has attributes
An Essence has transcended, for It has attributes
of all beauty and all adornment.
Of every beauty and adornment, I maintain
إنif رامَsought تحصيلهنgrasping them فكريmy thought
بنيتُI built بيتيmy house بتبنتينwith two pieces of straw
If my thought sought to grasp them,
If my mind seeks to comprehend them
I would build my house with two pieces of straw.
I'd build my home on two ruins
