Thoughts surrounded us on every side,

And so my pathways came to be barred against me.

Frowning at whoever has come in an unsmiling guise—

And is Ridwan’s face like Malik’s countenance?

But when I learned that I

Had become the slave of the most generous Master,

Who relieves me of every distress I have felt,

My state then made me master of all kingdoms.

So I answered the call in reverence and gratitude to my Creator,

And glorified my Lord in all the rites.

And I told myself: our God did not multiply

His rites except for the sake of holding fast.

For if you do not find Him right here, perhaps you will see

That you find Him here; so beware the veil of your confusion.

Every people has one whom they seek,

And I, under love’s rule, am among your people.

I lodged with the Real in devotion, for He is

The existence of what you seek in your devotion.

And do not steal: indeed, existence is forbidden

To you if you lack reliance in your theft.

You grew restive and failed to attain what you sought,

Because of what your very restiveness imparted.

You entered childbed, and none approached you but a denier,

A habitual liar; this has its source in your childbed bleeding.

So do not draw fire from the fire-stick, for it is

A veil over Him, for He is your very drawing of fire.
