Far, far away is what you are promised!

Alas, alas for what they promised

Those of whom it was said, 'They despair in the Blaze'—

Of those who spoke ill of them while immersed in luxury

حالَ إله الخلق ما بينهم

حالَ إله الخلق ما بينهم

وبينه شرعاً فلا يرحمون

وبينه شرعاً فلا يرحمون

the God of creation has set a barrier between them

The state of the God of creation is between them

and Himself by divine law, so they are shown no mercy.

And Him legally so they have no mercy

إنَّ على أبصارهم غشوة

إنَّ على أبصارهم غشوة

من ظلمة الجهلِ فلا يبصرون

من ظلمة الجهلِ فلا يبصرون

Indeed, a veil lies over their eyes

Indeed, over their vision is a veil

from the darkness of ignorance, so they do not see.

Of the darkness of ignorance so they do not see

ناداهم الحقُّ ألا فاسمعوا

ناداهم الحقُّ ألا فاسمعوا

فلم يجيبوا وأبوا يسمعون

فلم يجيبوا وأبوا يسمعون

The Truth called to them: 'Take heed, then listen!'

Truth called them, come and listen

But they did not answer and refused to listen.

But they did not answer and refused to hear

فلتاتهم ساعتهم بغتةً

فلتاتهم ساعتهم بغتةً

من عنده بكلِّ ما يكرهون

من عنده بكلِّ ما يكرهون

So let their Hour come upon them suddenly,

So their time will come upon them suddenly

from Him, with all that they detest.

From Him with all that they hate

تأخذهم منه على غفلة

تأخذهم منه على غفلة

في حال تفريط ولا يشعرون

في حال تفريط ولا يشعرون

From Him, it seizes them unawares,

It will seize them while heedless

in a state of negligence, while they are unaware.

In a state of neglect and they will not feel

قد علموا الأمر فأنساهمُ

قد علموا الأمر فأنساهمُ

أنفسهم سكراً ولا يعلمون

أنفسهم سكراً ولا يعلمون

They had known the matter, so He made them forget

They knew the matter but forgot

themselves in drunkenness, without their knowing.

Themselves intoxicated and they do not know

لا يُسأل الله عن أفعاله

لا يُسأل الله عن أفعاله

بهم كما جاء وهم يُسألون

بهم كما جاء وهم يُسألون

God is not questioned about His actions

God is not questioned about His actions

toward them, as has been stated, while they are questioned.

With them as it came and they are questioned

قد قيل فيهم وقفوهم يروا

قد قيل فيهم وقفوهم يروا

هذا الذي كانوا به يفتنون

هذا الذي كانوا به يفتنون

It has been said of them: 'And detain them, that they may see

It has been said of them, stop them, let them see

this by which they were put to the test.'

This which they were being tested with

قد فصَّل الله لهم مالهم

قد فصَّل الله لهم مالهم

وما عليهم في الذي يقرأون

وما عليهم في الذي يقرأون

God has clearly set out for them what is due to them

God has detailed for them their wealth

and what they owe, in that which they read.

And what is upon them in that which they read

جاءت به الأرسال من عنده

جاءت به الأرسال من عنده

مبشرين وبه منذرون

مبشرين وبه منذرون

The messengers brought it from Him,

The messengers came with it from Him

bearing glad tidings and, through it, giving warning.

Giving good news and warning

قال لهم خيالهم حكمنا

قال لهم خيالهم حكمنا

اللغو فيه فعسى تغلبون

اللغو فيه فعسى تغلبون

Their imagination told them: 'Our ruling is

Their imagination said to them we have judged

idle talk about it; so perhaps you will prevail.'

The nonsense in it, perhaps you will overcome

عاد عليهم حسرة لغوهم

عاد عليهم حسرة لغوهم

فيه فكانوا في الورى خاسرين

فيه فكانوا في الورى خاسرين

Back upon them as bitter regret came their idle talk

Regret at their nonsense returned upon them

about it; and they became losers among humankind.

So they were in the world losers

فأعرض الله وأرساله

فأعرض الله وأرساله

لما تولوا عنهمُ معرضين

لما تولوا عنهمُ معرضين

So God and His messengers turned away

So God and His messengers turned away

when those people turned away from them in aversion.

From them as they turned away obstinate
