Turn the riding camels toward Burqat Thahmad,

    Where the bough is moist and the meadow dewy;

Where lightning shows you its gleams,

Where clouds pass at evening and at dawn.

And raise your gentle voice just before dawn, calling

To the fair-skinned, graceful, beautiful, bashful maidens:

Each a slayer with eyes of vivid black and white,

Each bending her supple, graceful neck.

She swoops and slays every love-distracted heart

That loves fair women—with a dart and an Indian blade.

She reaches out with a tender hand, soft as silk,

Anointed with blended perfume and richly fragrant musk.

    يُعزى لِمُقلَتِها سَوادُ الإِئمِدِ

    She gazes, when she glances, with a young gazelle's eye;

Kohl owes its blackness to her eye.

Her kohl is coquetry and deadly enchantment,

Her necklace, pride and wondrous beauty.

Slender-waisted, she does not love what I love, nor

Keep faith with the one to whom she pledged her word.

She trailed her braid—a black serpent—

To frighten, with that black serpent, whoever follows her.

By God, I have not feared death; rather,

My only fear is to die and not see her tomorrow.
