I pierced the veil of the unseen, seeking its secret.

But I found only astonishment and bewilderment.

So I returned to the created worlds, seeking to behold it,

But saw no firmly established knowledge in the created worlds.

So, O claimant to knowledge of elixirs—would that it

Were established among the weights as a precisely determined weight,

    Its constitution matching nature’s measures

In practice—no informant on the matter is found—

So as to turn the full moon’s very substance into a radiant sun,

And fashion Bahram into suns and moons.

Then the Balance said to him: “There is no attaining me

For one who spends all time pondering me.

But attaining me comes by chance, for I

Am hard to grasp, whether absent or present.”
