The Real belongs to the All-Merciful in the Throne,

    and in the heavens, and in the earthly bed;

and in the falling rain, and in a downpour,

I praised Him also, and in the drizzle—

with praise abundant, wholesome, and pure,

that remains free of wrangling under scrutiny.

And every praise that contains no "I",

    God accepts without deduction.

The Real's seal differs from our seal

by the engraving we see in it.

Had our sheep escaped harm, there would have been no

judgment by Solomon over the engraving [possibly: night-grazing].

So His mightiest assault, for all His might,

falls below my assault in severity,

    فهي لدي بطشي كالخدش

    because He mingles it with His mercy, which has not grown narrow;

so beside my assault it is like a scratch.

I found Him, in the weighing of His deeds,

exceeding the weights by a nash.

I made my affection pure for love's beloved,

so there is no deceit in my affection.

    وأين عش السرِّ من عشي

    This is not your nest, so go your way;

how far the secret's nest is from mine!

I dug for Him among His names,

until I saw the matter in the digging.

He beguiled me at the self-disclosure, just as

He beguiled Abraham with the ram.

He made it appear in the form of a son of his,

so he nearly lost his senses from astonishment.

And so it is when it is not

like an explicit text about the matter it reveals.

Indeed, He and I are like a night that has come—

its day is for the child, as it casts its veil.

By God, my soul, do likewise:

when He comes seeking otherness, deceive Him,

until He sees [your act?] as His act,

as with Moses and his staff for beating down leaves.

He summed up a matter after detailing it,

so that the desired thing might be attained through searching.

He told us the wisdom of his grasping—

as he related—the leg of the Throne.

Indeed, his staff's sway has never ceased,

so that He who dims sight may see the eyes.

Far, far beyond reach is what you seek!

And what is Farghana beside al-Nash?

    I met a person near Wadi al-Qura,

and said, "This is Muhammad al-Lawshi."

But it was not he, so I said, "A trick against us!"

So thereafter I put no trust in grasping.

If a text comes to you contrary to what

I have stated, and walks in step with guidance,

    hold fast to its fringes,

and throw what I have stated into the privy.

I am a son of Shem, not a son of Ham; thus I have

    superiority over the Abyssinian crows.

In the master of the elephant there is a lesson for you,

and in the destroyers of the Kaaba, prying it apart.

God has a secret: were it revealed, they would find no guidance

through it—those men with bleary eyes.

By God, I concealed it from them

only because of the obscenity it contains.

    تراهم كالحمر الوحشي

    God has a people endowed with discernment;

you see them like wild asses.

They are wary, and they have a pause

that holds them back from the onslaught of recklessness.

The Throne is a bed for Him who is established

upon it, while it is the roof over the earthly bed.

    فنزِّهوا الرحمن ذا العرش

    So I see nothing without a relation;

so declare the All-Merciful, Possessor of the Throne, transcendent.
