فِراريmy flight عنfrom خوفِfear of عنايةِcare of مصطفىMustafa (the chosen one)
I fled to my Lord like Moses, and it was not
out of fear of Mustafa's care that I fled.

Then I was called: “Whom do you seek?” I said, “Union with the One
who called me to Himself before—and the trace has faded.”
فماso not هوHe مطموسٌeffaced وماand not هوHe واضحٌclear
وطالبهand one seeking Him بالنفسِthrough the self منهin relation to Him علىon شَفاa brink
He is neither effaced nor clear,
and whoever seeks Him through the self is on a brink before Him.
فلوfor if كانHe were معلوماًknown لكانthen He would be مميَّزاًdistinguishable
ولوand if كانHe were مجهولاًunknown لماthen not كانwould He be مُنصفاjust
For were He known, He would be distinguishable;
and were He unknown, He would not be just.

[Unclear opening]—would that I knew: shall I see Him as I see
my existence? And whoever hopes in one free of need has acted justly.

غلطتُI erred ولاand not واللهby God جئتُI came معنفاrebuking
Then the tongue of the state spoke, declaring that I
had erred—yet, by God, I had not come to rebuke.
فبادرنيthen He forestalled me فيin الحالthe present moment منfrom غيرother than مقصديmy intended goal
أياO حادبيmy two well-wishers عنديwith me ببابيat my door توقفاhalt, you two
Then He forestalled me at once, from a quarter I had not sought:
“O my two well-wishers, halt with me, at my door.
فإنيfor indeed I بحكمِunder the rule of العينِthe essence لستُI am not مخيراgiven a choice
ولوand if كنتُI were مختاراًfree to choose لماthen not سمعواthey would have heard قفاhalt, you two
For, under the rule of essence, I am not free to choose;
and had I been free to choose, they would not have heard, ‘Halt, you two!’”
فنيتُI vanished بهthrough Him عنيfrom myself فأدركَthen perceived ناظريmy eye

Through Him I vanished from myself, and my eye perceived
my existence; and had anyone else existed, he would have grieved.
فماso not ثَمَّthere إلاexcept ماwhat رأيتُI saw ومنand whoever يرمseeks

So there is nothing there but what I saw; and whoever seeks
other than what we saw is someone who has strayed blindly.

So he sought things on which his intellect passes judgment;
and what proof has affirmed, unveiling has denied.
