اللهGod أكرمُtoo generous أنْthat يحظىbe favored بنعمتهwith His grace
الله أكرمُ أنْ يحظى بنعمته
الطائعونthe obedient ويشقىwhile he suffers المجرمُthe sinner العاصيthe rebellious
الطائعون ويشقى المجرمُ العاصي
God is too generous for His grace to be enjoyed only
by the obedient, while the rebellious sinner suffers.
وإنand if شقىhe suffers فكآلامthen like pains يصيبُafflicts بهاwith them
وإن شقى فكآلام يصيبُ بها
المؤمنونthe believers فمنso among them دانٍone near ومنand among them قاصيone far
المؤمنون فمن دانٍ ومن قاصي
And if he suffers, it is like the pains that afflict
believers, some near and others far.
ولكنهمbut they عالمٌa world باللهon God مستندٌdependent
ولكنهم عالمٌ بالله مستندٌ
إليهon Him مفلسهمtheir pauper وربand the owner of أوقاصِtax-exempt increments of livestock
إليه مفلسهم ورب أوقاصِ
Yet they are a world dependent on God,
the pauper among them and the owner of surplus livestock alike.
إذاwhen رأىsees أهلthe household of بيتيmy house الكيسَthe purse ممتلئاًfull
إذا رأى أهل بيتي الكيسَ ممتلئاً
تبسمتْshe smiles ودنتْand draws near منيto me تمازحنيjoking with me
تبسمتْ ودنتْ مني تمازحني
When my wife sees the purse full,
she smiles and draws near to me, joking with me.
وإنand if رأتهshe sees it خلياًempty منof دراهمهits dirhams
وإن رأته خلياً من دراهمه
تكرَّهتshe shows displeasure وانثنتْand turns away عنيfrom me تقابحنيreviling me
تكرَّهت وانثنتْ عني تقابحني
And if she sees it empty of its dirhams,
she scowls and turns away from me, reviling me.
