Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, for

the states that have come from Him among humankind,

    وكلُّ ذلك محمولٌ على الراس

    those that gladden them and those that grieve them;

and all of this is borne upon the head.

His is praise; His is glorification, all of it,

since before our father, known as the forgetful one.

I worshipped Him and sought His aid, just as

He prescribed in sacred law, to free my breaths,

and asked Him to prepare right guidance for me in our affair,

and soften my hard heart within me,

so that through Him I may be upon the upright path,

noble in character, bringing happiness and comfort.

God is light, exalted beyond being matched by

any light; yet He shone forth to me in a lamp’s flame.

Had a creature, rather than his Creator, asserted this,

they would have called him an unbeliever, though the statement is blameless.

For it is a parable; were I to utter it, they would ask: ‘Is there

a healer for the ailment of this man who has spoken?’

I was ignorant of nothing but their times, and so

I was forbidden them—my whisperer and my skulker too.

If the steeds of reason raced to reach them first,

my steeds would win them in the race of unveiling.
