إنَّ الإله الذي بالشرعِ تعرفه

ليس الإله الذي بالفكرِ تدريهِ

The God whom sacred law makes known to you

Is not the God whom reason lets you view

العقلُ نُزّه والتحديدُ يأخذه

والشرع ما بين تنزيهٍ وتشبيهِ

Reason declares Him free of quality

While sacred law speaks of similitude

الشرعُ أصدق ميزانٍ يعرِّفنا

بربنا ولهذا همتي فيه

More truthful is the scale which sacred law

Provides, acquainting us with God - and so

إن الشريعة تجري غير قاصرة

والمعقل في عَمَه فيه وفي تيه

My quest is focused on sacred writ, for see

Unbound, sacred law flows generously

إنَّ العقولَ لتجري وهي قاصرةٌ

والشرعُ يظهرُه وقتاً ويخفيه

While reason, though it runs, runs impotently

And sacred law reveals and then hides He
