لماwhen اعتنىcared الرحمنthe All-Merciful بالمصطفىfor the Chosen One
لما اعتنى الرحمن بالمصطفى
فيin كربهhis distress جادتْgave generously لهto him بالنفسْwith breath
في كربه جادتْ له بالنفسْ
When the All-Merciful cared for the Chosen One,
When the All-Merciful cared for the Chosen One,
amid his anguish they gave their very selves for him.
In his distress, they freely gave him breath.
إذاwhen تلوناهاwe recite them لخوفٍbecause of fear بناwithin us
إذا تلوناها لخوفٍ بنا
بحكمِby virtue of إيمانٍfaith تكنthey will be كالعسlike the night watch
بحكمِ إيمانٍ تكن كالعس
If we recite them when fear is upon us,
When we recite them because of fear within us,
by faith’s decree they become like night sentries.
By virtue of faith, they become like the night watch.
ماno مثلُهاlike them منof آيةٍa verse آمنتtrusted
ما مثلُها من آيةٍ آمنت
نفوسُناour souls إلاexcept التيthe one that فيin عبس‘Abasa
نفوسُنا إلا التي في عبس
No verse like them has reassured
No verse like them has won the trust
our souls, save the one in Sūrat ʿAbasa.
Of our souls, except the one in ‘Abasa.
قدalready جاءتِhas come الصّاخَّةthe Deafening Blast فاسمعso listen لهاto it
قد جاءتِ الصّاخَّة فاسمع لها
فإنهاfor it is عينُthe very essence of غنىwealth المبتئِسthe distressed one
فإنها عينُ غنى المبتئِس
The Deafening Blast has come—so heed it;
The Deafening Blast has come, so listen to it;
for it is the very wealth of the afflicted.
For it is the very wealth of the distressed.
قدalready أظهرتhas revealed أحكامهاits decrees عندناamong us
قد أظهرت أحكامها عندنا
فيin دارِناour abode الدنياearthly فلمso why تبتئسdo you grieve
في دارِنا الدنيا فلم تبتئس
It has manifested its effects among us
It has already revealed its decrees among us
in this worldly abode of ours, and has not despaired.
In our earthly abode—why, then, do you grieve?
وليسand it is not كلُّall الناسpeople يدريknows بهاof it
وليس كلُّ الناس يدري بها
إلاexcept السليمُthe sound one العينِthe eye غيرnot الرئسthe head-stricken one
إلا السليمُ العينِ غير الرئس
Not everyone knows of it—
And not everyone knows of it—
only one who is sound of eye, not of head.
Only one sound of sight, not stricken in the head.
