Their dwelling places have faded, yet love for them

is ever fresh within the heart, never fading.

    وَلِذِكرِهِم أَبَداً تَذوبُ الأَنفُسُ

    These are their ruined dwellings, and these the tears;

and at their remembrance, souls forever melt.

I called out behind their caravan, out of love for them:

O you whose wealth is beauty—behold, I am bankrupt!

I rubbed my cheek in the dust, in tenderness and longing.

So, by the sacred truth of love for you, do not drive to despair

one who remains drowned in his tears, and in

the fire of grief, burning, and drawing no breath.

O kindler of the fire, gently! This

is the fire of longing—attend to it, and take a flame from it.
