I marveled at a being that encompassed every form,

Of the heavenly host, the jinn, and humankind,

And of a lower world and a world on high,

And of whatever animal there was, or plant or stone.

And it is not other than Him—no—nor is it His very self.

And in each thing, in whatever form He willed, He appeared.

And He appears to sight in His very essence,

Yet that One is hidden from minds and [is veiled?].

So minds fail to know Him through the judgments of their thought,

And imaginings make Him manifest to hearing and sight.

He is the Living, yet no life in His essence

Subsists as that by which all forms subsist.

Then tell me: who is He whom I have mentioned,

As we have described Him, while thoughts cast Him aside?

    So here He is, hidden, yet not absent;

And here He is, seen, yet hidden from sight.

Ah, would that I knew: have you heard of His like?

Come, then tell me: here, indeed, are lessons.

And none knew what we have brought except One:

He is God; no other innate nature knows Him.

And none is like Him save a little figure; and indeed I

Marveled at him: so complete, yet an epitome.
