توليتُI turned away عنهاfrom her طاعةin obedience حيثُwhen ملّتshe grew weary
فياoh, then ليتَwould that شعريmy knowing بعدناafter us هلwhether تولّتْshe turned away
I turned away from her in obedience, when she grew weary.
Oh, would that I knew: after our departure, did she turn away?
تأملتI gazed خلفيbehind me هلwhether أرىI see رسمthe trace دارهاher dwelling
فقالتthen said ظنونيmy conjectures لاdo not تخفْfear ماnot تخلّتْshe withdrew
I gazed behind me: could I see the trace of her dwelling?
Then my conjectures said, "Do not fear; she has not withdrawn."
تمتْshe is linked إليناto us وهيwhile she تهجرforsakes ذاتناour essence
فأفنىso annihilated وجوديmy existence عينهاher essence فاستقلَّتso she stood alone
She is linked to us, while she forsakes our essence.
So her essence annihilated my existence, and she stood alone.
تغافلتُI feigned unawareness عنهاof her مذsince علمتI knew بأنهاthat she
إذاwhenever بنتُI parted عنهاfrom her أنهاthat she وجهthe direction قبلتيmy direction of prayer
I feigned unawareness of her, since I knew that she—
whenever I part from her—is the direction I face in prayer.
تعجبتُI marveled منيat myself ثمthen منهاat her لعلمهاbecause of her knowledge
وجهليand my ignorance لماwhen ضللتُI strayed وضلتand she strayed
I marveled at myself, then at her, because of her knowledge
and my ignorance, when I strayed and she strayed.
ترىI wonder ليتwould that شعريmy knowing هلwhether ترىshe regards العلمknowledge حيرةbewilderment
وبالجهلِand through ignorance عزّتshe was exalted ثمthen بالعلمthrough knowledge ذلَّتshe was humbled
I wonder—would that I knew—does she regard knowledge as bewilderment?
And through ignorance she was exalted, then through knowledge humbled.
تخاطبهاaddress her منيfrom me سرائرthe secrets ذاتهاher essence
فماso not أناI منهاof her غيرهاother than her حيثُwherever حلّتshe dwelt
From within me, the secrets of her essence address her.
For I am of her, none other than she, wherever she dwells.
تولتshe turned away وماand not بانتْshe departed وماand not مشتshe walked
لأنيfor I am معلولan effect لهاof hers وهيand she علتيmy cause
She turned away, yet did not depart, nor did she walk.
For I am her effect, and she is my cause.
توهمتI imagined wrongly فيهاabout her حينwhen قلتُI said بأنهاthat she
هيshe الشرطthe condition فيin كونيmy existence وكانand it was لغفلتيdue to my heedlessness
I was deluded about her when I said that she
was the condition of my existence; that was due to my heedlessness.
تعاليتِyou are exalted ياO ذاتيmy essence فماfor no ثَمَّthere غيرناother than us
وماyet not هيshe عينيmy very self فاعلمواso know, all of you أصلَthe root حيرتيmy bewilderment
Exalted are you, O my essence; there is none but us.
Yet she is not my very self—so know the root of my bewilderment.
