    I read the book of the Real through the Real, granted understanding,

    and witnessed nothing but the tongues of creation.

    I grew restless; then, when I heard my teacher

    take names belonging to creation, I returned to the Real,

    near through the spiritual state I possessed, yet separate,

    far through the knowledge and created nature I possessed.

    He has indeed prospered who purified his soul's true nature,

    and he has indeed failed who buried it in the realm of closure.

    ولولا وجودُ الرتقِ لم أحظ بالفتق

    I gained mastery over my being through my knowledge of my Originator;

    and but for closure's existence, I would not have attained opening.

    Rarely do you see one once closed and layered

    win the reed of victory in reason's arena.

    وأين شهودُ الصفوِ من مشهد الرنق

    Whoever is given to thought is slain by the sword of illusion;

    and how far is witnessing clarity from beholding murk!

    فناداني المطلوبُ لا قرب في الصدقِ

    I sought through my sincerity to attain my Creator;

    so the One I sought called to me: "There is no nearness in sincerity."

    أيقنعُ بالتكليم من كان ذا عشقِ

    I was content with what had already come to me at the outset;

    is one possessed of passionate love content with being addressed?

    فيا ليت شعري هل يرى الحق في الحق

    I seized upon what he said, to refute him;

    ah, would that I knew: is the Real seen in the Real?
