If you do not know your God, devote yourself

to him through what you know, and take no intimate companion.

For I am receptive to all beliefs,

and I am of you, just as you are of us.

I favored you [reading uncertain] with what I brought you,

on the messengers’ tongues; your cords are from us.

I sent you one and chose him

for us and for you, from among you; you departed, but we did not.

You turned away from the covenant that was between us,

at a witnessing where the motes were grasped; we did not turn away.

I match you through fasting for me, since through you it was mine.

Would that I knew: do you submit as we submitted?

You departed, without command or a seer’s eye,

from the Essence through me, apart from humankind; we did not depart.

We held to a matter—[unclear word]—which you already knew,

and we remain upon it, as we have always been.

We know that we, when you roam within me through us,

have roamed in a field of witnesses, mighty chieftains.

If you stand for me, obedient in what I commanded you,

at your command, my servant, we stand when you stand for me.

    Firmly established knowings—I suppose their existence;

yet in negation lies my knowing, so we are as we were.

Thus my soul seeks no release for itself,

for, from its own nature, it has grown familiar with fetters and prison.

This is the field of its unbinding and release,

and we knew this matter only when we fasted,

but by the sacred Law’s permission, not through our intellects.

Even if my intellect spoke, I would not lend it an ear,

contrary to what the philosopher said through his thinking,

in ruling for release in maturity, according to what we uttered.

Thus we are, as you have known, like his Essence:

if I leave one meaning, another meaning binds it.

    His very unboundedness, if you judge fairly, has bound him;

so await neither an address nor permission concerning it.

We have never lacked a locus of manifestation that is his through us,

nor has any secret toward which one ascends been devoid of us.

An ascent of meanings, not an ascent across distance,

in manifold forms that arise through us and from us.

If this matter is between me and him,

he too has attained the like of what we have attained.

The matter that was clear has become obscure

to my intellect through my sacred Law; matters are as we said.

The One sought said to me, ‘I am not other than you:

if you increase, we prevail; and if you return, we return.’

As it came in the purified sacred Law that he

grows weary when the servants weary; thus we have gained

nothing of our own by which to distinguish ourselves from him; nor

has he possessed a thing apart from us, nor have we.

    In what I said, I crossed the limit of my created nature;

would that I knew: does it cross as we crossed?

This is strange; if it occurs, it is my desire.

God’s men stand upon it, if they ask for our release.

None of us, when he crosses his limit

into his opposite, takes delight there; but if we are secure,

that is the furthest reach there can be,

and whoever says it has become self-sufficient apart from humankind.

From this the Real speaks of my sufficiency,

and of his servant, in his Qur’an’s ‘The Star’: ‘He enriched.’

Through acquisition the servant attained this, which came

to his saying, ‘He enriched’: he acquired what he was endowed with.

Draw near through what the one offered in sacrifice called out to his God,

with willing obedience from you; do not offer sacrificial camels.

    And be exalted, bewildered in the deserts of knowledge;

you will be given increase without provisions; do not enter the cities.

For the common people may reject it

when it comes to you; let him make distance from them a shelter.

    For taking a veil is a definite obligation;

so it came to us in that through which God drew near.

Were this not so, our blood

would be lawful to shed; O people of existence, we have informed you.

We counseled you with my Lord’s permission; nothing remains

but for you to comprehend what I said when he granted us understanding.

We brought it white, pure like me,

truly free of selfish purpose, and we made it clear.

I seek no wage for that, nor do I see

any recompense for it, if you increase when we make things clear.

Whoever possesses knowledge and verified unveiling,

when he calls, let him repent as we repented.

    On that turns the matter in every messenger;

so I told them, ‘Build—one builds upon the like of this.’

    ووالله خاضت ونحن فما خضنا

    My soul spoke truthfully to you in its discourse;

by God, it plunged in, while we did not plunge in.

    ولا تتأوّل واتخذه لكم حصنا

    Hold fast to truthful speech in every state;

do not interpret it away, and take it as a fortress for yourselves.

Do not deem the Real powerless, for he is able,

and be as God told them concerning us.

For he became manifest in a person of exalted station,

and affected him through what he had made known to us:

out of modesty, reverence for him, and gentleness.

His saying came back upon us, and we suffered harm.

God’s blessing be upon him as long as the sun rises,

and as long as doves lament for the drinking companions, and sing.
