Whoever worships God—God has indeed been worshipped.

He is the One alone; associate no one with Him.

As came to you in the verses of the Cave, in their last,

He ascribed that to him, so it found support.

He was charged with this act; and all acts

belong to God; no created being ever owns its act.

Yet it has been ascribed to him, while He is its doer,

to distinguish whoever acknowledges or denies.

Indeed, the realities have left us not a hair,

in what we have brought forth concerning it, nor any wool.

For every act, God is indeed its creator,

yet you have given it a support besides Him,

so that he may be right; his attribution gains no favor

when he ascribes to Him what he has witnessed being done.

One is held to account only according to one's belief—

this is what I have said, justly, as it has come down—

except one who said it concerning God out of courtesy,

not from conviction; so He rewards him for what he intended.

And that is a question that has bewildered humankind,

and none knows it but the one who has witnessed.
