ذنبي عظيمٌ وذنبي لا يزايلني

ذنبي عظيمٌ وذنبي لا يزايلني

وليس ذنبي سوى حبي لمولايا

وليس ذنبي سوى حبي لمولايا

My sin is grave, and my sin never leaves me;

My sin is great, and my sin never leaves me.

yet my sin is nothing but my love for my Master.

Yet my sin is nothing but my love for my Lord.

لولاي ما كنت في سرٍّ أسرُّ به

لولاي ما كنت في سرٍّ أسرُّ به

عن الحبيبِ الذي يدرون لولايا

عن الحبيبِ الذي يدرون لولايا

Were it not for me, I would not dwell in a secret in which I rejoice—

Were it not for me, I would have no secret to conceal

a secret of the Beloved whom they would know, were it not for me.

From the Beloved, whom they would know were it not for me.

هو النعيمُ لقلبي والعذابُ له

هو النعيمُ لقلبي والعذابُ له

إذا تجلّى لنا بدارِ دنيانا

إذا تجلّى لنا بدارِ دنيانا

He is bliss to my heart, and its torment,

He is bliss to my heart, and torment to it,

when He reveals Himself to us in the abode of our earthly life.

When He reveals Himself to us in the abode of our earthly life.

وهو النعيمُ الذي لا صد يعقبه

وهو النعيمُ الذي لا صد يعقبه

إذا بدا لي في موتي وأحيايا

إذا بدا لي في موتي وأحيايا

And He is the bliss after which no hardship follows,

And He is the bliss that no estrangement follows,

when He appears to me in my death and my life.

When He appears to me in my death and my revival.

وفي الكثيبِ وفي عدنٍ وقد علمتْ

وفي الكثيبِ وفي عدنٍ وقد علمتْ

نفسي بأنَّ كثيبِ الزور مثوايا

نفسي بأنَّ كثيبِ الزور مثوايا

And on the Dune, and in Eden—my soul has come to know

And on the dune and in Eden; and it has become known

that the Dune of Visitation is surely my dwelling place.

To my soul that the dune of visitation is my abode.

إذا تحققتُ بالمعنى وكان لنا

إذا تحققتُ بالمعنى وكان لنا

ملكا نصرِّفه فالحقُّ معنايا

ملكا نصرِّفه فالحقُّ معنايا

When I am realized in the Meaning, and there is ours

When I realize the meaning, and we have

a dominion to wield—for the Real is my Meaning.

A dominion we wield, then the Real is my meaning.

به أكون عميداً خاضعاً وبه

به أكون عميداً خاضعاً وبه

أكونُ صاحبَ تمليكٍ بعقبايا

أكونُ صاحبَ تمليكٍ بعقبايا

Through Him I become a chief, yet humble; and through Him

Through Him I am love-stricken and submissive, and through Him

I become one possessed of dominion in my hereafter.

I am granted dominion in my hereafter.

والله لو نظرتْ عيناي من أحد

والله لو نظرتْ عيناي من أحد

سواه ما برحتْ تبكيه عينايا

سواه ما برحتْ تبكيه عينايا

By God, if my two eyes were to look upon anyone

By God, if my eyes looked upon anyone

besides Him, my eyes would never cease to weep for Him.

Other than Him, my eyes would never cease weeping for Him.

إنا إلى الله بدءاً عند نشأتنا

إنا إلى الله بدءاً عند نشأتنا

وفي البرازخ مشهوداً بأخرايا

وفي البرازخ مشهوداً بأخرايا

Indeed, toward God we are bound from the first, at our creation;

Indeed, we are bound for God from the beginning, when we come into being,

and in the intermediate realms He is beheld at my final end.

And in the intermediate realms, He is witnessed in my hereafter.
