للهto God belongs دَرُّthe excellence of عصابةٍa company سارتjourneyed بهمwith them
لله دَرُّ عصابةٍ سارت بهم
نجبُnoble riding-camels of الفناءِself-annihilation لحضرةto the presence of الرحمانِthe All-Merciful
نجبُ الفناءِ لحضرة الرحمانِ
God bless that company, borne along
by the noble camels of self-annihilation to the All-Merciful's presence.
قطعواthey spent زمانهمtheir time وبذكرِand in remembrance of إلههمtheir God
قطعوا زمانهم وبذكرِ إلههم
وتحققواand they attained realization بسرائرِof the inner mysteries of القرآنِthe Qur'an
وتحققوا بسرائرِ القرآنِ
They spent their time in remembrance of their God,
and realized the innermost mysteries of the Qur'an.
ورثواthey inherited from النبيthe Prophet الهاشميّthe Hashimite المصطفىthe Chosen One
ورثوا النبي الهاشميّ المصطفى
منfrom among أشرفthe noblest of الأعرابthe desert Arabs منfrom عدنانِAdnan
من أشرف الأعراب من عدنانِ
They became heirs to the Hashimite Prophet, the Chosen One,
among the noblest desert Arabs, of Adnan's line.
ركبواthey rode بُراقBuraq الحبِّlove فيin حرمthe sanctuary of المنىwishes
ركبوا بُراق الحبِّ في حرم المنى
وسرواand they journeyed by night لقدسِto the sanctum of النورِlight والبرهانand proof
وسروا لقدسِ النورِ والبرهان
They rode love's Buraq in the sanctuary of wishes,
and traveled by night to the sanctum of light and proof.
وقفواthey stood علىupon ظهرِthe surface of الصَّفاthe smooth rock فأتاهمُand there came to them
وقفوا على ظهرِ الصَّفا فأتاهمُ
لبنthe milk of الهدىguidance منfrom منزلthe Revealer of الفرقانthe Criterion
لبن الهدى من منزل الفرقان
They stood upon the smooth rock's surface, and there came to them
the milk of guidance from the Revealer of the Criterion.
قرعواthey knocked at سماءَthe heaven of جسومهمtheir bodies فتفَّتحتand then opened
قرعوا سماءَ جسومهم فتفَّتحت
أبوابُهاits gates فبدتand then appeared لهمto them عينانtwo beings
أبوابُها فبدت لهم عينان
They knocked at the heaven of their bodies, and open flew
its gates; then two beings appeared to them.
عينone being تبسَّمsmiled ثغرهاits mouth لماwhen رأتْit saw
عين تبسَّم ثغرها لما رأتْ
أبناءهاits children فيin جنةِthe garden of الرضوانdivine favor
أبناءها في جنةِ الرضوان
One being's mouth smiled when it saw
its children in the garden of divine favor;
وشمالهاand to its left عينa being تحدَّرَstreamed down دمعُهاits tears
وشمالها عين تحدَّرَ دمعُها
لماwhen رأتهمit saw them فيin لظىthe blaze of النيرانِthe fires
لما رأتهم في لظى النيرانِ
and to its left, a being whose tears streamed down
when it saw them amid the blaze of the fires.
قرعواthey knocked at سماءَthe heaven of الروحِthe spirit لماwhen آنسواthey perceived
قرعوا سماءَ الروحِ لما آنسوا
جِسماًa body تُرابياًof dust بلاwithout أركانelemental constituents
جِسماً تُرابياً بلا أركان
They knocked at the heaven of the spirit when they perceived
a body of dust without elemental constituents.
فبداand then appeared لهمto them لاdivinity (first fragment) هوتdivinity (second fragment) عيسىJesus المجتبىthe Chosen One
فبدا لهم لا هوت عيسى المجتبى
رُوحاًas a spirit بلاwithout جسمٍa body ولاnor جثمانِa bodily frame
رُوحاً بلا جسمٍ ولا جثمانِ
Then the divine nature of Jesus, the Chosen One, appeared to them,
as a spirit without body or bodily frame.
كملَbecame perfect الجمالُbeauty بيوسفin Joseph فتطلعواand so they aspired
كملَ الجمالُ بيوسف فتطلعوا
لمقامto the station of إدريسIdris العليّexalted الشانin rank
لمقام إدريس العليّ الشان
Beauty reached perfection in Joseph, and they aspired
to the station of Idris, exalted in rank.
ورثواthey inherited الخلافةthe vicegerency إذwhen رأواthey saw هارونAaron قدhad already
ورثوا الخلافة إذ رأوا هارون قد
أربتْrose higher منازلهhis stations علىthan كيوانSaturn
أربتْ منازله على كيوان
They inherited the vicegerency when they saw Aaron, whose
stations had risen higher than Saturn.
نالواthey attained الخلافةthe vicegerency عندماwhen نالواthey attained منىthe aspirations of
نالوا الخلافة عندما نالوا منى
موسىMoses كليمinterlocutor of الراحمِthe Merciful الرحمانِthe All-Merciful
موسى كليم الراحمِ الرحمانِ
They gained the vicegerency when they attained the aspirations
of Moses, interlocutor of the Merciful, the All-Merciful.
سجدَprostrated themselves الملائكةُthe angels الكرامthe noble إليهمbefore them
سجدَ الملائكةُ الكرام إليهم
دونwithout اعتقادbelief in وجودِthe existence of رَبٍa Lord ثانيa second
دون اعتقاد وجودِ رَبٍ ثاني
The noble angels prostrated themselves before them,
without believing in the existence of a second Lord.
طمحتْsoared بهمwith them هماتهمtheir aspirations فتحللواand they freely partook of
طمحتْ بهم هماتهم فتحللوا
فيin حضرةthe presence of الزُلفىnearness قِرىhospitality for الضيفانِthe guests
في حضرة الزُلفى قِرى الضيفانِ
Their aspirations bore them aloft, and they freely partook,
in the presence of nearness, of the guests' feast.
كملتbecame perfect صفاتهمtheir attributes العليةlofty وارتقواand they ascended
كملت صفاتهم العلية وارتقوا
عنbeyond سدرةthe lote-tree of الإيمانfaith والإحسانand spiritual excellence
عن سدرة الإيمان والإحسان
Their lofty attributes reached perfection, and they rose
beyond the lote-tree of faith and spiritual excellence.
للذاتِto the Essence كانwas مصيرهمtheir final destination فحباهمُand then He endowed them
للذاتِ كان مصيرهم فحباهمُ
بشهودهwith beholding Him عيناًdirectly بلاwithout أكوانcreated things
بشهوده عيناً بلا أكوان
Their final destination was the Essence; then He bestowed on them
direct vision of Him, without created things.
وصلواthey reached إليهto Him وعاينواand they beheld directly ماwhat أضمرواthey had kept hidden
وصلوا إليه وعاينوا ما أضمروا
منof غيبِthe unseen realm of سرِّthe secret of السرّthe secret كالإعلانas though openly disclosed
من غيبِ سرِّ السرّ كالإعلان
They reached Him and beheld what they had kept hidden
of the unseen realm of the secret of the secret, as though openly disclosed.
سبحانهglory be to Him وتقدَّستand hallowed are أسماؤهHis names
سبحانه وتقدَّست أسماؤه
وعنand beyond الزيادةِincrease جلّHe is exalted والنقصانand decrease
وعن الزيادةِ جلّ والنقصان
Glory be to Him, and hallowed are His names;
and He is exalted beyond increase and decrease.
