إنَّ الزمانَ الذي سميته بفنا

هو الزمانُ الذي سميته بفنا

هو الزمانُ الذي سميته بفنا

Indeed, the time that you have called annihilation

Is the time that you have called annihilation.

هذا الزمان إذا فكرت فيه ترى

هذا الزمان إذا فكرت فيه ترى

في شانه عجباً لم يتخذ سكنا

في شانه عجباً لم يتخذ سكنا

This time—if you reflect upon it, you will see

A marvel in its nature: it has taken no abode,

مع طولِ صحبته لكلِّ طائفةٍ

مع طولِ صحبته لكلِّ طائفةٍ

من الخلائقِِ روحاً كان أو بدنا

من الخلائقِِ روحاً كان أو بدنا

Despite its long companionship with every class

Of creatures, whether spirit or body.

يذمّه كل شخصٍ إذ يشاهده

يذمّه كل شخصٍ إذ يشاهده

وإنْ مضى كان ما قد ذمّه حسنا

وإنْ مضى كان ما قد ذمّه حسنا

Every person reviles it when he beholds it,

Yet once it has passed, what he reviled becomes good.

ما أنصفَ الدهر خلقٌ من بريته

ما أنصفَ الدهر خلقٌ من بريته

وهو الذي يورث الأفراح والحزنا

وهو الذي يورث الأفراح والحزنا

No being among its creatures has done justice to Time,

Though it is what bequeaths joys and sorrow.

فينظرون الذي قد ساءهم أبداً

فينظرون الذي قد ساءهم أبداً

وينظرون وجودَ الخيرِ والمِننا

وينظرون وجودَ الخيرِ والمِننا

So they forever look at what has distressed them,

And they see the presence of goodness and blessings;

فيسترون الذي قد سرّ أكثره

فيسترون الذي قد سرّ أكثره

ويجهرون بما قد ساءهم علنا

ويجهرون بما قد ساءهم علنا

Then they conceal what has, for the most part, brought joy,

And publicly proclaim what has distressed them.

فدا خالقه بنفسه فلذا

فدا خالقه بنفسه فلذا

يقول إني أنا الدهرُ الذي امتحنا

يقول إني أنا الدهرُ الذي امتحنا

It ransomed its Creator with itself; thus

He says, 'Indeed, I am Time, which has been put to the test.'
