نارا وما أحرقت نبتاً وما التهبا
Were it not for Moses’ desire, the light would not have turned
Into fire; it burned no plant, nor did it blaze.

So beware—may I be your ransom!—for the matter holds deceptions:
It shows you one who stood upright now lying down.

Indeed, it has changed for beholders into forms
Of many kinds; the beholder neither spoke truth nor lied.

Rising in his horizon unexpectedly, and never setting.

Wonder is not at a blessing you have enjoyed,
But at a torment in which sweetness is found.

From him; curtains and veils are rent.

Indeed, the discerning man is like Dhu al-Qarnayn; his habit is:
No path ends but he seeks another path.

It shows you, in his being, a marvel of its working.

Just as [he transforms] the sun’s orb, in my sight,
From the Mount’s right side, in a valley there, into flame.

Indeed, he has changed for me from his very form,
In a form not his own, in what he went forth with.

So I kept seeking him, while the eye beheld him,
Yet I did not recognize him, because of what veiled him.

I asked, ‘Who?’ He told me, ‘Do not abandon medicine.’

By God, if your two eyes beheld whom they beheld,
They would see none but us; so observe due courtesy.

My self’s discourse with my self—and I am the discourse—
Is like the unit that the multiplier multiplies by itself.

So do not double it or count it as many,
For it is its very self—how noble a kinship!
