إنindeed سرِّيmy secret هوit is قوليmy saying
إننيindeed I am عينُthe very essence of وجودِهhis existence
Indeed, my secret is my saying:
I am the very essence of his existence.
وإذاand when أبصرbeholds عينيmy eye
أننيthat I am عينُthe very essence of شُهودِهْhis witnessing
And when my eye beholds
that I am the very essence of his witnessing,
وبذاand through this يكونُis شُكريmy gratitude
إنْif شكرتُI give thanks منfrom مزيدهhis further bounty
thus my gratitude is—
if I give thanks—from his further bounty.
أقربُnearer الأمرthe matter لكونيto my being
منthan يكنmay be حبلُthe cord of وريدهhis jugular vein
The matter is nearer to my being
than the cord of his jugular vein can be.
فأناso I بينbetween مُرادٍone who is desired
لحبيبيby my beloved ومُريدهand one who desires him
So I stand between being desired
by my beloved and desiring him.
عدمٌnonbeing لستُI am not وجوداًexistence
معdespite كونيmy being منamong عبيدهhis servants
I am nonbeing, not existence,
though I am among his servants.
بوجوديthrough my existence أثبتhas affirmed الناthe beholder (first part)
ظرthe beholder (remaining part) عنديfor me عينَthe very essence of جودهhis bounty
Through my existence the beholder has affirmed
for me the very essence of his bounty.
