Existence is indeed the very reality of determination and essence,

the realization of my pains and my pleasures.

And its determination consists of forms, intrinsically manifest

to the eye in the present, not in the past or the future.

We say, “This is a sphere”; we say, “This is an angel,”

    in whatever realm—earth or heavens.

So the forms differ, but the reality is one.

And in it are surely signs for whoever knows.

    وحكم أعياننا عينُ الدلالات

    And it is that which is negated, if you comprehend it;

and the determination of our entities is the very essence of indications.

    وعِزة الحقِّ ما أدري بغايات

    So you see no forms running toward their endpoint;

by the might of the Real, I know of no endpoints.

The matter is like a cycle or a line: it has no

end in its extension, like quantities.

By supposition it has endpoints, if considered

by our intellects; this is not intrinsic to it.

Existence is indeed a house in which you dwell,

through illusion, within the very rooms it contains.

    وإنها صورُ أولادِ علاَّتِ

    Yet to one with insight there are no rooms there;

and they are forms of siblings born to different mothers.

Indeed, he who brought entities into being, in my view,

is surely a maker whose work is without instruments.

Without his work, one with insight would not know

that he is the maker of all that comes to be.

And they are forms manifest to the senses,

yet they are divided into living and dead.

And all are alive, for all have glorified Him.

His Qur’an taught me that; so bring

its like, if your claim is true.

And if I fail, that failure comes from my own self.

Were it not for opposition that arose within their souls

against it, a confirming proof would have rendered them powerless.

Truthfulness is your foundation in inimitability; He taught me

that in the presence of the Lord of all creatures.

So be truthful: you will see a marvel in what you utter

to those who hear it, of hidden things.

    وليس يدري به أهلُ الضّلالاتِ

    That is guidance for the one who has spent the night seeking it;

and the people of error know nothing of it.

So linger on the bank of its valley; perhaps you will see.

And do not say that it is among the impossibilities.

And rise through it, seeking whatever wisdom you wish,

and do not turn aside toward people of idle pursuits.

And stand with it as a banner atop a watchtower,

for in it are signs for whoever knows.

And beware a people’s folly if they grow angry,

for God destroys those given to fanatical zeal.

O seeker of the Real and realization in my words,

I have placed what you seek within the folds of my verses.

Smallness and greatness—use whatever epithet you wish,

like “al-lutayyā” when made diminutive, and “allātī.”
