بالذي قلت إنه عين ما بي

من سؤالٍ ومنطقٍ وجوابِ

By that which you said was the very essence of what is in me,

With what you said that it is the very essence of me

Of question, speech, and answer,

Of asking, and logic, and answering

برّد اليوم عن فؤادي غليلا

برّد اليوم عن فؤادي غليلا

فقبولي عليه عينُ انقلابي

فقبولي عليه عينُ انقلابي

Quench today the burning thirst in my heart.

Today it cooled the heat in my heart

So my acceptance of him is my very reversal.

So accepting it is the very essence of my turning

بوجودي عرفته وبنفسي

بوجودي عرفته وبنفسي

فهو منها بنا كحشو إهابِ

فهو منها بنا كحشو إهابِ

Through my existence I knew him, and through myself;

With my existence I knew it and with my soul

Thus he is from it, through us, like the filling of a hide.

So it is part of it as the lining of clothing

بانَ عني فقلتُ بان حبيبي

بانَ عني فقلتُ بان حبيبي

فأراني في البعد عين اقترابي

فأراني في البعد عين اقترابي

He departed from me, so I said, “My beloved has departed.”

It became clear from me so I said my beloved appeared

Then, in distance, he showed me my very drawing near.

So it showed me in distance the very essence of my nearing

بنتم قال لا ولكن جهلنا

بنتم قال لا ولكن جهلنا

فلذا ما يقول ما بي وما بي

فلذا ما يقول ما بي وما بي

“You have departed.” He said, “No, but we went unrecognized.”

You slept then he said no but we were ignorant

Thus what he says is what is in me, and is not in me.

So for that he doesn't say what's with me and what's with me

بالهوى فزتمُ وشاركتموني

بالهوى فزتمُ وشاركتموني

في اسم حبيّ والشوقُ للغيابِ

في اسم حبيّ والشوقُ للغيابِ

Through passionate love you prevailed and shared with me

With passion you transcended and shared with me

In the name of my love; longing is for the absent.

In the name of my love and longing for absence

بعتم الرشد بالغَواية فينا

بعتم الرشد بالغَواية فينا

وهو رُشد الهداةِ والأحباب

وهو رُشد الهداةِ والأحباب

You sold right guidance for error concerning us,

You replaced sanity with misguidance in us

Yet it is the guidance of guides and beloveds.

And it is the sanity of the righteous and loved ones

بدرة أنت بالكمال فما لي

بدرة أنت بالكمال فما لي

قلت بالنقصِ إنني في حجاب

قلت بالنقصِ إنني في حجاب

You are a purse of coins in perfection; why, then, did I

You are a pearl in perfection so why did I

Speak of imperfection? Indeed, I am behind a veil.

Say with deficiency that I am in veil

بحجابي علمت أني لما

بحجابي علمت أني لما

جئتكم جئتكم بأمرٍ عُجاب

جئتكم جئتكم بأمرٍ عُجاب

Through my veil I knew that when I

Came to you, I came to you with a wondrous matter.

بينوا أمرنا لكل لبيبٍ

بينوا أمرنا لكل لبيبٍ

في كلامٍ إن شئتم أو كتاب

في كلامٍ إن شئتم أو كتاب

Make our affair clear to every discerning person,

Explain our matter to every understanding one
