By God, not a hair's worth of what is mine has reached him,

Of knowledge and nearness—nor a tuft of wool.

Nor has it taken definite form in anything belonging to us,

Even were he to live as long as Lubad lived.

God has a people endowed with knowledge and gnosis,

And when He calls them, they crowd tightly around Him.

    لو يشهدون الذي شهدته شهدوا

    Blind, yet their eyes gaze by the light;

Were they to witness what I witnessed, they would witness.

They do not witness; yet if their realities arise

Within them as direct vision from their Lord, they witness.

Indeed, the servants whom the Real appointed

For Himself and chose—all of them worshiped

His majesty and persisted in worshiping Him.

Even were He to manifest to them in their own essence, they would worship Him.

No one wavered concerning Him through His own wavering,

Except men who, through Him, were worshiped by their own selves.

For that reason He placed them at a station among creation,

Through which, in every state, they were worshiped among humankind.

We have a beloved, pure in essence, in my mind,

And neither spirit nor body has contained Him.

For His sake there arose in me what they bear witness to:

Musk, fragrant incense, perfuming, and saffron dye.

And I, for His self-disclosure—when beheld

In my essence by the realized one's eye—am a body for Him.

When what characterized me became manifest through me,

For that reason, envy arose in whoever knew of it.

They drew near to the exalted Presence when there appeared

From them the banners of their truthfulness; they did not grow distant.

If the veils of otherness are lowered [reading uncertain], and on this side of them

He keeps them and lifts the veil, they have grown distant.

God has a people of warriors, beyond number,

And indeed, His Most Beautiful Names are their number.

The commander of the vast army is their master,

And they are many; their number cannot be counted.

If they aid God, He aids them with His resolve,

And aid comes to them from their passing thoughts.

    وما حواهم فلم تقطعهم المدد

    Time lost its way and failed to number them;

Nor did it encompass them, so time's spans did not cut them off.

When I was confronted by one I had thought

To be with me and my mainstay, no support remained to me.

Whoever has His Most Beautiful Names as his support,

Linked 'from' to 'from' in his ascent, his chain rises high.
