Between nature and the Command was born

an existence called the world of creation and the Command.

I melt and vanish with tenderness and ardent longing,

whenever I remember God, in secret and aloud.

    And in the form of created beings I beheld my companion;

thus my beloved’s names multiplied in my verse.

So if I utter verse about a particular little figure,

he is nothing but what my breast contains.

He is the Real, but realities have bound him,

which subsist through him, from intellect or sense or thought.

My inner self and my witness commune with him in secret,

by his names, whether he is in the even or the odd.

I speak my love to him, and hear his reply

with what I said: his rule operates like an echo.
