ألا فاتبع من كان عبداً مخصصاً

ألا فاتبع من كان عبداً مخصصاً

بعلمٍ غريبٍ لم ينل ذوقه خبرا

بعلمٍ غريبٍ لم ينل ذوقه خبرا

Behold, follow one who is a servant singled out

Follow the one who was devoted

for unfamiliar knowledge whose savor has not been fully grasped.

With strange knowledge, its taste not grasped by the experienced

ولا تعترض فيه عليه لأنه

ولا تعترض فيه عليه لأنه

سيحدث في معناه منه لكم ذكرا

سيحدث في معناه منه لكم ذكرا

And do not object to him concerning it, for he

And do not object to him in it, for he

will give you an account of it, concerning its meaning.

Will mention for you about its meaning a reminder

ولا تك فيه موسوياً فإنه

ولا تك فيه موسوياً فإنه

مع القول بالتعديل لم يستطع صبرا

مع القول بالتعديل لم يستطع صبرا

And do not be like Moses in this, for he,

And do not be in it an opposer, for he

despite affirming uprightness, could not remain patient.

Despite saying to reform could not endure patience

تزحزح ألباب الرجالِ إذا رأوا

تزحزح ألباب الرجالِ إذا رأوا

بأعينهم من غيرهم أحدثوا أمرا

بأعينهم من غيرهم أحدثوا أمرا

Men's minds are shaken when they see

The minds of men are shaken when they see

with their own eyes others performing some deed.

With their eyes from other than them, something new occurred

فينكرهم في الحين ديناً وغيرة

فينكرهم في الحين ديناً وغيرة

فيرهقها المتبوع من أمرها عسرا

فيرهقها المتبوع من أمرها عسرا

Then he condemns them at once, out of faith and zeal,

So they deny them immediately in religion and zeal

so the one they follow burdens their minds with hardship in their affair.

And the followed one burdens them with the hardship of his matter

فإن عاد بالأعراض عنهم لنكرهم

فإن عاد بالأعراض عنهم لنكرهم

تقيم له مما أتته به عذرا

تقيم له مما أتته به عذرا

If he then turns away from them because of their disapproval,

If he turns away from them for denying him

their minds offer him an excuse drawn from what they brought him.

She stands for him from what came to him an excuse

كذا سنة الرحمن في كلِّ تابع

كذا سنة الرحمن في كلِّ تابع

ومتبوعه فاحذر من العالم المكرا

ومتبوعه فاحذر من العالم المكرا

Such is the All-Merciful's way with every follower

Thus is the way of the Merciful with every follower

and the one he follows; so beware the learned one's guile.

And his followed, so beware the cunning scholar

فمن يتق الله العظيم بحاله

فمن يتق الله العظيم بحاله

سيجعل له الرحمن من أمره يسرا

سيجعل له الرحمن من أمره يسرا

Whoever is mindful of God the Mighty in his state,

Whoever fears God the Almighty in his state

the All-Merciful will grant him ease in his affairs.

The Merciful will make easy for him his matter

ومن يتوكل في الأمور على الذين

ومن يتوكل في الأمور على الذين

يكون بها أولى كما أنه يدرى

يكون بها أولى كما أنه يدرى

And whoever relies, in his affairs, on those

And whoever relies in matters on those who

who have the greater claim to them, as is known—

Are most worthy as he knows

وقد جعل الله العليمُ بأمرِه

وقد جعل الله العليمُ بأمرِه

لكلِّ الذي يجريه في خلقه قدرا

لكلِّ الذي يجريه في خلقه قدرا

and God the All-Knowing has indeed, by His command, appointed

And God the All-Knowing has made

a measure for everything He brings about in His creation.

For all that which He destines in His creation a decree

لقد جئتكم بالأمر من عند ربكم

لقد جئتكم بالأمر من عند ربكم

كما جاءت الأرسال من عنده تترى

كما جاءت الأرسال من عنده تترى

I have indeed brought you the command from your Lord,

I have certainly come to you with the order from your Lord

just as the messengers came from Him, one after another.

As the messengers came one after another from Him

وإني لهم في كلِّ ما قلت وارثٌ

وإني لهم في كلِّ ما قلت وارثٌ

ولم ألتمس منكم ثناءً ولا أجرا

ولم ألتمس منكم ثناءً ولا أجرا

And I am their heir in everything I have said,

And I am for them regarding all I said an inheritor

and I have sought from you neither praise nor reward.

And I did not seek from you praise or reward

وأجري على الله الكريم جعلته

وأجري على الله الكريم جعلته

لديه إلى يوم الورود لنا ذخرا

لديه إلى يوم الورود لنا ذخرا

And my reward rests with God the Generous; I have made it

And I made my reward with the Bountiful

a treasure for us with Him until the day of arrival.

With Him until the day we arrive, a treasure
