    Beautiful, yet unloved; manifest, yet unseen.

    The man of thought and proofs is indeed bewildered by him.

    تحيره الأمواجُ في هذه اللججْ

    I committed wrong with a companion in every state;

    The waves bewilder him in these deep waters.

    Sound thought ran with him to a certain limit,

    Yet it never left the shore, nor reached the sea’s heart.

    ففي عينه نفيُ العقولِ مع المهج

    All intellects are drowned, whether in witnessing or reflection;

    For in his essence is the negation of intellects and souls.

    I gathered my being for him; it was nothing other than him.

    So I was bewildered: I do not know whether he dwelt in me or departed.

    Inevitable destiny coursed through every being,

    According to the state it is in; it bears no blame for that.

    May God reward on our behalf whoever repays the one who wrongs us

    With goodness for his wrongdoing, so he came to rejoice.

    A fitting recompense, not one by chance; and indeed they

    Speak of divine oneness, while the matter is twofold.

    We wronged him through acceptance; so our affair

    Is confused: the cosmos itself appears when mingling occurs.

    A coupling with a female called Nature,

    From it was born everything that crawled or walked.
