Self-sufficient, needing none of all creation, in His very Essence—and He who
He is independent of the created worlds in His Essence, and is the One
possesses a radiance of the divine Names that none can attain.
Whose radiance of the Names is beyond attainment.

The one entrusted with vicegerency among creation went astray;
He who holds the authority of vicegerency among humankind went astray.
therefore the Qur’an truly declares: “We shall attend to you.”
Thus the Qur’an truly says: “We shall attend.”

غريقٌ ببحرٍ والنجاةُ بعيدةٌ
ولولاand were it not for وجوديmy existence لمnot يرhe sees الحقَّthe Real يدمغُHe deals a crushing blow
ولولا وجودي لم ير الحقَّ يدمغُ
Drowning in a sea, while salvation lies in a sweet draught—
Drowning in a sea, and deliverance is far away.
but for my existence, the Real would not be seen crushing falsehood.
And were it not for my existence, he would not see the Real deal a crushing blow.

The Self-Sufficient—though I strive to multiply remembrance—
He is self-sufficient, and I diligently increase remembrance.
said, “I am wholly free of all that.”
So He said: “I am free of all that.”

Through Him I became free of need, for my being was His existence;
I grew rich through Him, since my being was His existence.
and through Him I arose, as He poured me into nature’s mold.
And through Him a new being is poured into nature’s mold.

A stranger—the eye sees him in a land of exile,
A stranger whom the eye sees in a land of exile,
far from his kin; what is hoped from him shall be attained.
Away from his kin, and what is hoped of him will be attained.

Our going astray was only for a wise purpose:
Our straying was only for a wise purpose.
it is right guidance issuing from a command brought by the Messenger.
It is right guidance arising from a command the messenger carried out.

I choked on my saliva—indeed, I choked on its water;
I choked on my saliva—rather, I choked on its water.
what wonder, when it is life itself! So proclaim it.
And, O wonder—it is life! So proclaim

The keen edge of death’s sword—and judgment is the arbiter;
The edge of death’s sword—and judgment is decisive.
a tongue eloquent in speech, by no means lisping.
A tongue eloquent in speech—it does not lisp.

A cloud of inward yearning—the Real’s coming at the Resurrection’s Gathering;
A cloud of burning longing, the coming of the Real at a gathering,
and spirits of angels—say so, and accept it.
And spirits of angels—so speak, and allow it.
