الوهمimagination يصلحmends ماwhat الألبابthe intellects تفسدهthey spoil it
الوهم يصلح ما الألباب تفسده
فيconcerning الحقthe Real لكنهاbut they ماdo not لوهمfor an illusion تعبدهْthey worship Him
في الحق لكنها ما لوهم تعبدهْ
Imagination mends what intellects spoil
Illusion amends what minds corrupt
Concerning the Real; yet they do not worship Him for an illusion.
Yet truly they worship not illusion
العقلُthe intellect يحكمjudges والأوهامand imaginings تحكمهthey govern it
العقلُ يحكم والأوهام تحكمه
فيهconcerning Him فتضبطهso they grasp Him ولاand do not تحدِّدهْdelimit Him
فيه فتضبطه ولا تحدِّدهْ
The intellect judges, while imaginings govern it
Reason rules and fancies rule it
Concerning Him; thus they grasp Him but do not delimit Him.
Checking it, not defining it
وكيفand how يحكمjudges عقلٌan intellect قاصراًbeing deficient حدثٌoriginated
وكيف يحكم عقلٌ قاصراً حدثٌ
علىover مكوّنهits Maker والعجزand incapacity مشهدهwhat it witnesses
على مكوّنه والعجز مشهده
And how can an intellect, deficient and created, pass judgment
How can a finite infant reason
On its Maker, while incapacity is what it witnesses?
Rule its maker, feebleness its spectacle?
تنوّعdiversifies الذاتthe Essence بالأفكارthrough thoughts إنindeed لهاit has
تنوّع الذات بالأفكار إن لها
مثلa likeness to الهيولىprime matter ولكنbut لاnot تعدّدهmake Him multiple
مثل الهيولى ولكن لا تعدّده
The Essence is diversified through thoughts, for it has
The essence varies in concepts if
A likeness to prime matter, yet He is not made multiple.
It has a primordial matter but no numbers
يرميshoots at الإلهGod بهاwith them منwhoever كانexists عنهfrom Him بهthrough Him
يرمي الإله بها من كان عنه به
وليسand does not يرميshoot بهthrough Him إلاexcept ويُقصِدهand strikes Him
وليس يرمي به إلا ويُقصِده
One whose being is from Him, through Him, shoots them at God,
God casts it at one veiled from Him
And never shoots through Him without striking Him.
And hits none but the one He intended
العقلُthe intellect بالنظرthrough reflection الفكريّintellectual يمسكهholds Him fast
العقلُ بالنظر الفكريّ يمسكه
والكشفُand unveiling يرسلهreleases Him ولاand does not يقيدهbind Him
والكشفُ يرسله ولا يقيده
The intellect holds Him fast through intellectual reflection,
Reason in intellectual speculation grasps it
While unveiling releases Him and does not bind Him.
And revelation sends it unfettered
لوif كانthere were للعقلِfor the intellect حكمٌauthority فيconcerning مكوّنهits Maker
لو كان للعقلِ حكمٌ في مكوّنه
لماthen would not أتىhave come شرعهHis revealed law وقتاًat any time يفندهto refute it
لما أتى شرعه وقتاً يفنده
Had the intellect any authority over its Maker,
If reason judged its maker
His revealed law would never have come to refute it.
No law would come in time to refute it
