I saw the full moon in the sphere of lofty stations,

He points toward me, state after state,

And seeks me to rob me of my heart,

Thus compelling me to the humiliation of asking.

He called me at dawn with a call of trial,

Until the time of midday and the sun's decline.

Then, when he did not answer him, he called to him in love,

And in unceasing longing, through the last nights.

None but my heart was the one who called to him,

So my hands gained no bounty

So I returned to union from union.

Yet within it lies its knowledge for the men—

The men of God: I mean none besides them.

For the full moon's light is not the crescent's radiance,

Yet in one respect it is its radiance too,

Just as guidance is the very essence of error.

    وهذا ليس من غير المحال

    The locus distinguishes it, and nothing else;

And this comes from none but the loci.

Like the names of God, which have a domain,

And indeed their domain comes from this domain.

    يؤدي من علاه إلى اعتلال

    Like the roof of the House, his station is the same;

It leads from its height to infirmity.

So beware of what betrays you in the analogy.

For the servant is God's servant, unless

You see him as a target amid the tall spears.

Therefore, if he is set up with certainty,

As a mark for arrows in the archery contest,

And he fell from some spear-ferrules—how strange!

He obeys the lofty ones among the long spears.

And in the next world, my Lord's perfection shows you

My annihilation then, or my vanishing.
