أَحبابُناour beloveds أَينَwhere هُمُthey
بِاللَهِby God قولواsay (you all) أَينَwhere هُمthey
Our beloveds—where are they?
Where are our loved ones
By God, say: where are they?
For God's sake, say where are they
كَماjust as رَأَيتُI saw طَيفَهُمtheir apparition
فَهَلthen, will…? تُرينيyou show me عَينَهُمtheir very selves
Just as I have seen their apparition,
As I saw their specter
will you then show me their very selves?
Will their eyes show me
فَكَمso how often وَكَمand how often أَطلُبُهُمI seek them
وَكَمand how often سَأَلتُI asked for بَينَهُمunion with them
So how often, and how often, I seek them!
How often and how often I seek them
And how often I asked for union with them,
And how often I asked among them
حَتّىuntil أَمِنتُI felt safe بَينَهُمamong them
وَماyet not أَمِنتُI felt safe بَينَهَمparting with them
until I felt safe among them—
Until I despaired among them
yet I did not feel safe from parting with them.
And I did not despair among them
لَعَلَّperhaps سَعديmy good fortune حائِلٌa barrier
بَينَbetween النَوىseparation وَبَينَهَمand between them
Perhaps my good fortune stands as a barrier
Perhaps my luck is an obstacle
between separation and them,
Between my wishes and them
لِتَنعُمَso that it may delight العَينُthe eye بِهِمin them
فَلاso not أَقولُI say أَينَwhere هُمthey
so that the eye may delight in them,
For the eye to delight in them
so I do not say, “Where are they?”
So I do not say where are they
