At your service, at your service—from one who heeds and one who calls,

For the healing of the illnesses and pains within me.

You called me in the tongue of the Real, seeking me.

Indeed, when I had called the Hearer, the Aware,

    إذا أجبتُ فما خيبت أطماعي

    You called me and guaranteed what would gladden me;

When I answer, you do not disappoint my hopes.

Do not rejoice in anything you do not know.

Indeed, identity is in the one called and the caller.

Through him I heard, just as through him I spoke; therefore,

He has indeed taken among us the place of guardian and shepherd.

I am his follower as long as he seeks me,

Just as, when I call, I am among my own followers.

Nor is he among my partisans until I succeed through him,

And when I call him, he is indeed among my partisans.

Thus he descends, in the subtle kindnesses of his wisdom,

In the cubit and the armspan, as he draws near.

He has thus assumed a measure, though measure is not his.

And he is utterly truthful; thus my hearing has been bewildered.

Where is the Cloud? And from the jugular vein he came

In his nearness; and whenever I am one who hastens,

He comes to me, as he has said, at a run.

And the difference between the mudd and the saʿ is known.

Indeed, transcendence and likeness are a battle,

And that is my good, which I know, and my allotted lands.

I have said only what God has said to us

In describing himself, in sayings and formulations.

When I brought it to the marketplace of theology, it refused,

And said, “It is not my wares or my goods.”

Except the hadith scholar and the Sufi, who came together,

And the believers; this is knowledge by consensus.

Indeed, intellects have a limit that governs them,

And knowledge of origination is not known through it.

Indeed, I have made the strange knowledge known to you, yet

I am not one given to disclosure and dissemination.

Indeed, I have found what I seek by journeying:

The journey of realities, in my rest and my hastening.
