قد تاه غلمانُنا علينا

قد تاه غلمانُنا علينا

فما لنا في الوجودِ قدرُ

فما لنا في الوجودِ قدرُ

Our servant-boys have grown insolent toward us;

Indeed, our boys have grown haughty toward us.

so we have no standing in all existence.

So we have no standing in existence.

أذنابُنا صُيرت رؤوساً

أذنابُنا صُيرت رؤوساً

ما لي على ما أراه صبرُ

ما لي على ما أراه صبرُ

Our tails have been turned into heads;

Our tails have been made heads.

I have no patience for what I see.

I have no patience with what I see.

قد أوذي الله مثل هذا

قد أوذي الله مثل هذا

فالوقتُ حلو وقتاً ومرّ

فالوقتُ حلو وقتاً ومرّ

Even God has been affronted in the same way;

God has indeed been affronted like this.

for time is sweet awhile, then bitter.

So time is sweet for a while, and bitter.

هذا هو الدهر يا خليلي

هذا هو الدهر يا خليلي

فمن يقاسيه فهو دهر

فمن يقاسيه فهو دهر

This is Time itself, my friend;

This is Time, my dear friend.

whoever endures it is Time itself.

So whoever endures it is himself Time.
